I have been reading up on wall hangers as I am planning on purchasing some. I hear the good and bad about them. What are the general opinion on wall hangers?
I have heard long term hanging can be bad. I don't get to play everyday, and I don't get to play each one of my guitars when I do. I understand many shops use them, but how long do they stay on those hangers?
Are they safe for your guitar?

When a guitar is built, many prestress factors are built in. The main body of the Instrument is intended to be the primary support structure. The neck and head stock are strong but not intended to support the entire weight of the structure. Continuous and long term hanging by the neck may cause the truss rod setting to be compromised and even warp the neck. Think of holding a 10lb. book out to your side for 30min. Wow, your arm will give out. Hold the same book close in to your body and you can easily support the weight indefinitely. :)

Never really though of that. Have you heard of, or experienced guitars definitely getting damaged by hanging on a rack? I supposed they are safest in their case... but they look so good on the wall! 8)

The 10-16lb pressure that the weight of a guitar body puts on the neck is absolutely nothing compared to the 100lb per inch odd pressure that the strings put on the neck.
I've used two of em for thirteen years now, never had a single problem. Guitar shops don't have a problem hanging guitars. Some of them don't get handled for months on end.

When you think about it, on a hung guitar the weight of the body acts in favor of the guitars stability against the strings.

Thanks Niki. I thought bout the string tension/pressure as well. Good to hear that you've had no problems. Which brand did you buy?

If you think of a guitar shop the instruments are more than likely moved frequently. Think of the head stock of a guitar as being the business end as well as the most vulnerable to compromise. the stress of supporting the strings is built in, add another 10lbs. to that and you have created a significant potential. Do the math, it's your guitar. And yes I have seen damage from hanging. from scuffed finishes to bent tuners and guitars that were out of tune and needed repair. I am not a luthier just using good common sense and 50 years experience in handling guitars. :)

I use something very similar to this Martin guitar hanger.

Mine are made by JHS. Dunno if you get them over your way.

Just found the stud in the wall and fixed it onto that. It's easy to find the studs in a wall. Just tap across the wall. You'll hear a less hollow sound where there is a stud.

Yep you're right the case is the safest storage option.

Such a comparison is a non sequiter.

Instead, cradle the book above your head vertically, in the outstretched palm of your hand.

By that measure, ten pounds is nothing.

A visit to virtually any competent luthier's shop will reveal instruments stored via wall-hangers. If there were issues of concern I'd think they'd be the first to acknowledge them.

i agree. nothing wrong with wall hangers. shops have used them for decades.
think about those two little screws that hold the strap and the weight of the guitar.
the only risk i see is either the hanger pulling free from the drywall because it wasnt set correctly, or the guitar getting bumped in the hanger. either of which is error of man, not design.

I have been hanging my guitars in my guitar lounge for over 10 years and have never had a single problem. The only thing I would caution is to make sure you get it into a wall stud. I use Off The Wall hangers and decided that to make sure one never fell off or had it pull loose from the stud, so I attached the hanger to a wooden plate and then used 3 1/2 inch long wood screws to attach the plate and hanger to the wall. As I said never had a problem with them pulling loose or any problems with the necks or truss rod issues ever.

wall hangers suck if you're not in a "dust free" environment....
they're also no good for nitro finishes (I know, not a prob for most Fenders) one that was sold as "safe for nitro" ate the finish off the contact points on my Flying-V.
the fine print (it was pointed out to me) read, MOST nitro finishes.....absolving them of any responsibility for damages.

I've used wall hangers for quite some time, since my non-existent little brother was a gleam in the milkman's eye.

Not once have any of my guitars disintegrated, exploded or spontaneously combusted.

I can only imagine that this means the wall hangers are safe.

Check out the Hercules ones that close over the neck- very useful.

And to be honest... a hanging guitar knocks seven shades of poop out of a picture. Get them hung up. 8)

Vlad, I like your style. Welcome to the forums! Enjoy your stay! :)

I never had a problem with hanging my guitars. Some people hang their guitars even by a piece of string... especially if they are Swedish molto-importante rock gods....

Here are some of mine... I use K&M hangers, though I can highly recommend teh Hercules as well.

Hanging is ok. Just make sure the hangers are tightly connected to the wall.
I have stopped hanging my acoustics though, I can control the humidity better when they're inside their cases.

Cheers!
