UPDATE!: Okay, everything was goin smoothly until today, in my right ear i have this constant ringing that fades in and out and everything sounds muted in it, left one seems fine. Ive been playing with ear plugs and its been going good. I hope this ringing isnt permanent and i end up up like Mr. Townsend

stop pour salt on your damaged ear.
let it heal for a couple weeks at a very low volume if an amp at all bro.
now is the time to be proactive about your hearing creep.
just trying to look out for ya man.

as we're on this discussion about how to protect your ears, tell me is listening to a drummer hit as hard as he can in a very confined space gonna do alot of damage?

I don't know if a 20 watt SS amp is making you deaf. Headphones, too many concerts yeah, but a 20watt SS amp? I don't know, I'm not a doctor. Still you should always protect your ears. I have Tinnitus. It's pretty bad sometimes. I got it from using too many high wattage amps and working in a machine shop without hearing protection.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not discounting your hearing damage, but I think it's a bit more complicated than cranking a Mustang I. Be careful. Not all hearing loss is permanent. Your ears will develop wax to protect themselves. Sometimes, it's just as simple as having a doctor clean and irrigate them. Tinnitus is usually forever. I have to sleep with some sort of sound in the room or the ringing get really bad.

For many reasons:

You have probably damaged your ears with high volume sound. You need to lay off the loud guitar, radio, mp3.......

I have been this route before, and am dealing with tinnitus every day for the last 20 years. You need to go to an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor otherwise know as a "Otolaryngologist". A typical general doctor will just clean the wax out of your ear and send you off, really a waste of time and money. The Ear Dr. will check you out for general health of your ears etc.

The only definitive way to determine how much hearing damage you might have is to have your hearing tested my an Audiologist. They will put you in a sound proof booth and feed in tones starting at low frequency and work their way up until you cannot hear the sound. What you will end up with is a graphic image of your hearing levels. Your Ear Dr. will be able to refer you to an Audiologist.

Meanwile you need to relax and not do crazy stuff like pouring salt into your ear and that goes especially to high volume sound of any kind. Sounds like you still a young person if your parents insurance is what your still covered by.

Hearing damage is permanent, once the cells of the inner ear are damaged they are dead. Nicotine is poison to the inner ear, so are many other medications and things that can get into your body. So stop the smoking. Caffene will agrivate it, so will Asparin.

The intensity of tinnitus will fluctuate. I find when I am very tired or anxious it bothers me more. If I really get bothered by it and focus on it it becomes all I can hear and sounds like jets warming up in my head, othe times it sounds like crickets singing in the night. If you focus on it it will sound louder and eventually drive you nuts. If you only have it in one ear your lucky.

The aging process alone tends to bring on hearing loss and often tinnitus. the trick with tinnitus is to accept it and learn to deal with it. It's not going away. That is much easier said than done especially for persons who tend to be obsessive personalities.

One of the things that helped me most was to realize how many people are walking around with this and are dealing withit successfully. The American Tinnitus Association has a web site with helpful information.

William Shatner (Captain Kirk) developed tinnitus and has a touching story about learning to deal with it. Eric Johnson, definately and obsessive personality, had a real problem with it and had to go into the hospital. I think Jeff Beck had some serious tangles with it too.

Relax, go to the Ear Doctor, Get your hearing measured by an Autiologist, stop the smoking. Exercise, get plenty of rest, and cut the volume down. Read up on hearing loss and tinnitus on the internet. If you have any questions I wil be glad to answere to the degree of my knowledge.
