So I was at Chicago bluesfest tonight and toward the end of her great set Coco Taylor's daughter Cookie passed on the crown of Queen of the Blues to Shemekia. Pretty cool thing to see such an honor passed on. I will agree she is awesome, and her band rocks too! Thanks to all keeping the blues alive + congrats Shemekia!

Daughter of Johnny Clyde Copeland, a big gorgeous woman with pipes that won't quit...great performer, great singer...and she truly deserves the Queen of the Blues crown*!

If you ever get a chance to watch her "Austin City Limits" performance, do so...she sent chills up my spine a couple of times (and not the way my sister-in-law does  ).

(*just barely above our own Texas Guitar Slinger, of course...since TGS is so young, maybe she could be the "Princess of the Blues"...she's gonna kill me when she reads this!) 8)

Wow, really? I've known her for years. I organized a benefit for her dad when he needed a heart transplant back in the ‘80s. I knew her father Johnny ‘Clyde’ Copeland from playing with him at “Gilly’s” in Dayton OH.

yep she can sing for sure, but not my idea of "queen of the blues" by no means.
