Hey guys,
Just got done with Kenny Wayne Shepherd's film: 10 Days Out... Blues From the Backroads...I've got to say, there's some incredible guitar playing in that film. I had all but forgotten about Hubert Sumlin, and never was real familiar with his music, but man, at 80-something, that man can still do his thing on that Strat! And although I've always been a fan, I almost forgot how good a player KWS is until I watched this DVD.
So, basically, I said all that to say this...If you haven't seen it, check out 10 Days Out... Blues From the Backroads.

+1 Tim, even the unknown players in that film are great. I like how Kenny takes a backseat to the other players as well, sure he busts out some great solos but he lets the featured player do their thing. It's a a documentary about southern music, not KWS.

Thanks for the heads up, Hubert Sumlin should be declared a National Treasure down there. I have to say he was one of the nicest people I everhad the privilge to meet. I hung out with him for three days back in 1970 when he was playing with the Wolf at the Colonial in Toronto, where I had the amazement of seeing him hand Jeff Beck his head on a platter lol. (long story).

Yeah, he definitely did a good job of 'hanging out' back in the mix...he did tear it up a few times, but certainly wanted to let the real stars shine. I was most impressed with the acoustic performance at Leadbelly's grave with Buddy Flett. I'd never heard of him before, but his voice is crazy good.

Wow, really? Hubert was on most of Howlin' Wolf's hit recordings. I've backed him several times.

I had heard of him and heard his music only a few times. After seeing this film though, I am a fan for sure. Just rediscovering Hubert's music makes me wish I'd seen this film earlier.

My respect for KWS (previously shaky and tenuous at best) increased twentyfold after watching that video.

I liked some of his music ("Blue on Black" was one of the best blues/rock songs of the late 1990s, and "Aberdeen" was a very cool--and atypical for him--song), but my overall impression of him was just another "Vaughan-a-be"...

But seeing that DVD made me see his respect for his elders as well as his ability to branch out from the SRV/Hendrix licks...that was still a part of his vocabulary and his performances, but I found out he had a "second gear."

I have to agree with you all, this DVD (and CD!) truly is a great work! I'm a fan of KWS, and I thought it was great to see all of those amazing guitar players he got to jam with -- I hope that I'm still able to play guitar when I'm in my 90's!! haha Some of the people he played along with I previously didn't know about, and was pleasantly surprised with their talent!

I thought it was great how respectful Kenny was and how he would take the back seat and just watch and learn from the blues greats. I also thought that the DVD showed how great an individual Kenny Wayne is, on a personal level. It's always nice to know your favorite musicians are good-hearted folk.

Anyway, I definitely recommend the DVD/CD set to anyone who hasn't seen this yet!!

You and me both! If I can still play a chord or two when I'm at that age, I'll be happy!
