Just another casualty of the very weak music scene of Arizona... I actually played at the blues jam just a few days before they closed..

Seems like this location just doesnt work... 2 other owners had to close their doors also within the past 10 years...

Here is a quote from another page...

Co-owner Nayo Jones has confirmed that the beloved venue has closed its doors - at least for now.

"This is not a somber occasion, this was a business decision that we had been considering for some time," said Nayo, who partnered with her father, Doc, to open the central Phoenix lounge and cafe in January 2009.

Even though Nayo noticed an increase in the number of out-of-town visitors to Doc's Place, she said that it was time for her and Doc "to move on." They both had a desire to focus on other music projects and they were anticipating a slow summer based on the turnout in previous years.

Nayo hinted that Doc's Place might come back in the Fall but admitted that it's a longshot.

In the meantime, Nayo wants to thank Doc's Place supporters for their support.

"People were in love with our atmosphere," said Nayo. "We did a job and we left an impression on the community for almost three years."

Tragic indeed. Several venues for live music in Tucson have also tanked.

The music scene's not doing so good out there huh? My move to AZ is still looming, not sure how many shows I was planning on playing in the future, but I like to catch local acts around town from time to time.

Live music is struggling all over. Here we have almost 30 new bars since 2008 when the Great Flood wiped out eight square miles, giving the town almost 60 live venues. But in the last year or so, many of the places I used to play regularly have bought their own karaoke machines and started the slow swirl down the toilet. Blame it on the economy or the circles of life, but folks just aren't spending their money in the bars right now and failing to supply a regular, steady source of live music is going to further reduce bar income.

I've always said one of the main reasons dumb bar owners can make it is that it's so easy to skim the register. Of course, their employees do it, too.

Well we did get Sue Foley and Buddy Guy play recently in Phoenix... The big names will likely not skip Arizona... Its just the local scene is very weak... Considering the size of the city... We will always have some blues jams to go to... But not many it seems..

It's terrible that live music venues are becoming fewer and fewer. It seems that every bar/club that opens these days has that monotonous dance/rap/hip-hop/pop garbage that's polluting the airwaves.Thankfully there's a lot of venues in Newfoundland that cater to live music as music has always gone along with religion as playing a huge part of our culture. You'd be hard pressed to find a home-especially in rural NL-without a musical instrument of some sort with guitar, fiddle, tin whistle and accordion topping the list.
My nephew who has chosen to be a professional musician hasn't had any problem supporting himself from music alone as there even is a huge market for alternative and classic rock-which he plays. We have more professional musicians per capita than any other province thanks to our very supportive live music venues.

Dose Arizona's music dilemma have anything to do with the number of part time residents there are? you now, The old "SNOW BIRD" thing. I know that thousands of folks pull up and go back from where they came, about every March or April. My parents did it for 25years and they were big music fans. That has to have some effect on the economy and music in general. :(

I doubt it's a factor, at least in Tucson. The clubs that closed were long-time fixtures of the local music scene and most snowbirds aren't into metal/alt/ska/emu, etc. Some places simply changed formats and became sports bars and karaoke palaces.

The Tremolo is on the far side of town (relative to the places I frequent). They're still alive and kicking though their website hasn't been updated in a few months now. It's not a hard-core rock palace though -- they cater to a pretty specific clientele.

Well,it's a hard thing to try and play music around Nashville also, especially the blues.
It seems like the old saying goes,"if it ain't country,it ain't music" is applied, now don't get me wrong, some country is okay, but if it's not that,it's either some young "musicians" banging away on their respective instruments to a small local following who praise their limited efforts...or the kari-okey crowds...the ones who wish they could sing.
I talked to a friend the other day who is a very well respected blues singer who goes back to the late '60s California scene. She does well in other parts of the country and she is largley unknown to the local "blues afficiandos" who think SRV invented the genre.
She says she never plays in this town,Nashville, because of the aforementioned reasons,it's a shame...maybe when I retire from my day job,I can play for her.
here's a couple of vids,Tracy Nelson...it's a shame that people don't hear an amazing singer like Tracy, locally, she's better now than ever....
