Les Paul did not create the Gibson 'Les Paul'. The LP design was created by Ted McCarty and was endorsed by Les Paul to compete with Fender.

Les did have quite a bit of input on the Les Paul. Especially on the electronics end of it. He told me that himself. There's a lot claim to all kinds of stuff regarding the LP. It just depends on who you talk to. Les pretty much claimed to invent almost everything.

Les Paul built one of the first solid body electric guitars out of a piece of 4x4 called "The Log".
Its a long debate as to who came up with the solid body first. Les Or Leo?

I'm not sure, but possibly the "Frying Pan" by Rickenbacker I believe was the first electric lap steel. But I believe Les invented the first solid body electric guitar.

I've never heard of the "Frying Pan". I'll have to check it out.

Who cares who did what. The fact is, Les Paul's name is on an iconic design. He was a great player too.

Les Paul was a huge influence in the music industry and always will be.

As far as the discussion on the first solid body guitar; A show I watched on the Smithsonian channel made a claim that the Slingerland Songster was the first solid body electric guitar (not counting lap steels like the Ric 'Frying Pan'). And although it looked very similar to a lap steel, it was intended to be played like a 'regular' guitar. It was advertised throughout the late 30s/early 40s but never had much success. I think they're cool, and though there will probably always be a debate about what the first solid body was, I think the Songster was it.

:) Another thing that he is given credit for, is being one of the first if not the first, to lay down 26 or 27 tracks over each-other. creating an incredible new sound Mary ford was also a big contributor in this new way of recording. Check out her voice and you can here several layers. and think it was all done with tape and recorders back in the early 50's. :)
