A bass is always a nice thing to have around. Sometimes you can't help but find some nice bass lines while playing guitar - How convient it is that you happen to have one within arms reach :D

The J has a thinner neck at nut, then down the neck also. The J has two pups. Sound will vary from bass to bass. Stats are shown on the Products section of the Fender site. You really need to compare the two yourself in person for the sound you prefer between the two.

i'm primarily a rhythm guitar player. back in my college years, i always admired the lead guitarist and how heart and soul was poured out in the solo no matter what song we were doing.
one yard party i was at (way back in the 70's) the guys brought out all the instruments and of course, most were guitars. somebody asked me if i could play bass and i accepted the challenge figgering "if i know the chords, i know what notes to play".
the theory worked.
what i realized was... the lead guitarist feels the guitar solo waaaayyyy down deep... but the bass player feels the whole song.
i had a blast that afternoon.

go for it man!

a bad photo from my cell-phone, a mid 90s P-Bass, well broken-in so the sound is piano like with a lot of sustain.Image

Playing bass is annoyingly infectious.

If you want to get some seriously addictive grooves going, listen to Calvin Harris's first album, I Created Disco. In particular, the first track. Simple, but so much fun to play when you get it right!

For what it's worth, I prefer P-basses to Jazzes. Not sure what it is about Jazz basses, but they just don't get me the way Ps do.

As for the difference between P and J, as already pointed out, the Jazz has a thinner neck. Also the P bass has a single split humbucker in the mid-position on the bass body, while the Jazz has two single coils at the mid and bridge positions. As a result of the different type of pickups and their physical position on the bass, the P tends to be "thumpier" while the Jazz has bit more mids and highs. Since the Jazz has 2 pickups that can be mixed at various levels. it has a bit more different available tones.

Basically, everyone who's even a bit serious about bass should, eventually, have one of each, if only a cheapie version!

Here's my '80's MIJ Squier P-bass in action:

Here's my '90's MIM Fender Jazz (note the electric guitarist, seated, to the right, you might recognize him):

Of course, there's all kinds of cool basses out there-- don't limit yourself!

Well said; "Bass is annoyingly infectious."

'Had one for many years. Five ago, the church started a contemporary ensemble for Masses. They had a guitar strummer, so when the director was asked about bass, her ears perked up.

'Learned Church Bass on the fly, now it's been 245 Masses and "many" practices. Interestingly, the guitar strummer walked and this unschooled bassist is still happily plunking. More oddly, as melodic line guitar is daily instrument of choice.

Have fun on bass!
