Hi VB: yep, I saw that and gave it a bit of a twang. Though I think my personal tribute to Les Paul's birthday will be simply to play my LP. That instrument is only one of that gentleman's many amazing contributions to the world of guitars and recording - and a pretty fantastic contribution at that!

Selector switch on rhythm+lead, both tones wide open, bridge volume flat out, neck volume set to five - and away we go into tone yumminess! 8)

Cheers - C

But he didn't actually design the LP did he? I remember reading somewhere that he just decided the paint colors for the guitar, black and gold, and Gibson just wanted his name on it.

That's what the whole Google thing was about.
He supposedly had a lot of input on the design. It was the whole solid body guitar thing. He was trying to find a way of completely isolating the pickups from the body. He wanted low impedance pickups but that didn't work out in the final production. He was a really cool person to talk to. He invented tons of stuff. He even invented the harmonica holder.LOL
Here's a couple more shots from the Iridium not long before he passed. He had a bit of a cold then and I guess it turned into pneumonia.

Here's his highly modified guitar.

One more parting shot from the Iridium Jazz Club NYC

Happy Birthday and thanks for everything.

Worked OK for me. Though I'm not claiming to have recorded anything worth listening to with it...!

Hi Ceallach: a lot more than just the colors, to be sure. What 63Supro said, and then some. He was working at it for years, at both Epiphone and Gibson's facilities, if memory serves.

Of course, he didn't design that guitar single-handed, any more than Leo Fender invented the Strat all by himself. These are nearly always team efforts, and many other names belong both to the LP's body shape and the pickups. But still, Les's name sits rightfully on the peghead.

And that's only a tiny part of what he did. A huge contribution to multi-track recording, and some electronics gizmology that is far above my pay grade to describe. Someone else can pick up that bit of the story...

Cheers - C
