Has anyone ever tried a guitar with an asymmetrical neck contour? What did you think of it? Any significant difference in feel between it and a regular c neck or a v neck?

Are you talking about the compound radius necks like on the new deluxe's? If so I tried a few out at the local store awhile ago and they played nicely there wasn't any difference in the back of the neck that felt weird or anything. The only thing about them that didn't really float my boat was that they were all a pretty skinny profile and I like a chunky neck or one with a bit a meat on it preferably a soft V.

I played one of the newest Gibson Les Paul Standards....the ones with an asymmetrical neck. It really didn't feel so much different than a normal guitar neck. I chose the Les Paul Traditional over the Standard, but it was not because of the neck profile. One thing I wonder about though.......over time, with an asymmetrical neck, wouldn't it sound reasonable that the neck could twist, due to differing amounts of material between the bass and treble sides? Would the neck always "relieve" properly with truss rod adjustments???? Only time will tell!

The original Ernie Ball EVH signature guitars had assymetrical neck carves and to the best of my knowledge so did the successive incarnations. For my hand, I remember them as being quite satisfactory, but remember, they were done to EVH's specs, and might not suit everyone. I find his new guitar just as satisfactory a player.

His, I suspect, was designed to fit the valley between his thumb and index finger perfectly at any point on the entire length of the neck.

No, I was talking about the profile of the back of the neck. I just wanted to see what everyone's take on them was. I'm trying to decide between an asymmetrical profile or a v for the neck I'm going to get for my project guitar.

But for the record I do like compound radius necks too. You should check out the new Fender American Deluxe V Neck. It has a compound radius neck and it's nice and comfortable to play, I've tried several of them out and I liked every one. :)

Not sure I've played anything with an asymmetrical neck. I've been thinking about tackling a Strat build at some point. I'm sure I'll try a plethora of necks when that time rolls around. I tend to lean toward chunkier necks lately, I like the Warmoth boatneck profile the best of what I've played around with so far.

I have a fuzzy recollection that Nikininja played or plays a guitar with an asymmetrical neck carve. I don't want to report my half-remembered idea of what he said about it (assuming I've even got it right), so if he hasn't looked in on this thread over the next day or so I expect one of us might be able to russle him up.

'Course, I may have got the whole thing wrong...

Cheers - C

You mean like the SRV neck profile, that like offset V? The lead player in my band ordered the Warmoth SRV neck as a replacement on her Big Apple Strat. She loves it, it's odd feeling to me, but I like a chunky neck. If I could get a tele neck on a Jaguar I would be in guitar heaven.

That would be one. The EVH is another, and less meaty.

Ahh...ok I have played one then (the SRV model) and I honestly wasn't too keen on the neck. It wasn't bad, but wouldn't be my first choice.

SRV Neck that was what I was wondering...not a fan of that neck, but do love the pickups in that guitar though...Give me a nice V shape anyday!

Asymmetrical necks have two different shapes to the back of the neck. One on the treble side of the rear of the neck. Another shape on the bass side.

I've never bought a guitar with such a neck. I did however reshape one of my Strat's necks to be that way, The bass side has the V shapes straight shoulder. The treble side has a D shape to it. A VD shape neck.
Nice and ultimately comfortable, but it's a one off. Done by me, for me.
I got the idea after playing a bunch of Les Paul's.

Thank you for that!

I'm glad I left it to you to say it...
