Here's the REAL DEAL,Freddie King!...the guy Clapton was trying to pay tribute to but can't match....this is the blues, raw, emotional, and tension.....

I preferred tone 2 because I like the sound of the neck pup on a strat. The notes are cleaner and more defined to my ear and when the amp does break up its subtle and I like the harmonic overtones. Nothing wrong with the humbuckers. They are certainly fuller but the output on the humbucker is so much stronger that you need a much lighter attack to get that clean smooth note you get with a single coil. I like the distortion the humbucker brings but it was bit to gritty for my ears. I prefer the creamy distortion at lower volumes.

Tone 2 for me. Ive always liked the tone of a strat over the gibson. Unless we're talking heavier styles of music.

I think Clapton's Strat tone is horrible. It's just way too thin. Every time I hear him with Strat I cringe.

I saw him a few years ago in Philly. Robert Randolph opened for him. Clapton's Strat tone was seriously horrible. Like a dull icepick in the forehead. I just feel he sounds better and plays better with a Gibby. JMO. I can get that same thin out of phase tone on my Strat too and it just sucks hard to my ears. Always has. All I have to do is balance my pup selector in between the middle and bridge or neck pup and it's there. I don't have a 5 way switch on my 72 Strat and don't even want one. I am still a huge Clapton fan.

i think robert would sound killer loud as hell lol. the guy
has buckets of talent on tap and ready to share it with anybody willing to listen.
ive seen a several of his live video's. that guy comes out of the gate pumped
and just doesnt come down from there. his band has talent too. they are lucky
to have eachother supro i think.

Randolph was incredible. If you ever get a chance to see him and the Family Band you'll be in for a great time.

is it the mid range boost he uses causing the problem?

I like both, different performances, and the tone fit the performance.

It's just the way it is. On my Strat, If I use the setting between the bridge and middle pickup or neck pup, it gives you a sort of out of phase sound. Real thin way too much top end and not much sustain. For myself, I always boosted the signal. Years ago I use to use two Electro Harmonix LPB-1 power boosters cascaded. The first would drive the second into distortion. It sounded pretty cool. Don't get me wrong, I'm not commenting on his performance, just his Strat tone. Strat pickups were never the most powerful sounding pickups around until you boosted them with some sort of distortion device. Then look out.

Yea, I've always got my blues driver, screamer or big muff turned on depending on my mood, a little, a lot, or over the top dirt.

1 has more soul, 2 more attitude. It's not a matter of which is better. I went with #2 even though my Guild Starfire sounds very close to the 335. Well it would if EC played it.

I just finished watching Crossroads 2010 on PBS, and Clapton sounded great to me. His tone on the daphne blue strat, played on middle pickup, was very nice. I believe he's my favorite player, so I'm biased. On these two samples, I like both, voted for number 2. I like that Clapton Strat.
