Hello,

I am having knee surgery and will be out of work for 6 weeks, last time I had unrelated surgery I was out for 3 weeks and I ending up reading Eric Clapton's Autobiography which was good.

Does anyone have any recomendations for Blues history/literature books or DVDs that are good as I probably will be unable to do much in the first two weeks of recovery, thanks.

I have a vest collection of books & DVD, but lets start with Robert Palmer's book 'Deep Blues: A Musical and Cultural History of the Mississippi Delta' http://www.amazon.com/Deep-Blues-Musical-Cultural-Mississippi/dp/0140062238/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1307364148&sr=8-1 and the DVD 'Deep Blues - A Musical Pilgrimage to the Crossroads' http://www.amazon.com/Deep-Blues-Musical-Pilgrimage-Crossroads/dp/B00009VU35/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1307364148&sr=8-2.

Freddie King: Dallas, Texas Jan. 20th 1973 (1973) DVD http://www.amazon.com/Freddie-King-Dallas-Texas-Jan/dp/B00006L93Y/ref=sr_1_2?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1307364513&sr=1-2

Earl Hooker, Blues Master (American Made Music) [Paperback] http://www.amazon.com/Hooker-Blues-Master-American-Music/dp/1578063078/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1307364653&sr=1-1

"Rock + Roll Gearhead" by Billy F. Gibbons got me through a surgery recovery.

Although, with the Reverend's odd cadence and syntax, it was hard to understand exactly what he was saying while I was still on painkillers...I just looked at the pictures until my head was a bit clearer.

"Blues: Who's Who"

Pickup the film "Crossroads," entertaining and theres a scene where Ralph Macchio has a whole room full of Blues books and miscellaneous items.

"Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child" is a pretty interesting semi auto/biography,

Meh, can't stand that flick!

If you don't have them, get 'The American Folk Blues Festival 1962-1966, Vol. 1, 2 & 3' together at this link http://www.amazon.com/American-Folk-Blues-Festival-1962-1966/dp/B0000AYL2M/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1307383707&sr=1-1

-Texas Blues: The Rise of a Contemporary Sound

-The Stratocaster Chronicles (not really about blues specifically, but great if you like Strats)

-Down in Houston: Bayou City Blues

DVDs:
-Anything Involving SRV

-There are a lot of blues related videos on netflix instant view now, and even more if you have the DVD mailing service. There are a couple with Lightnin' Hopkins, and one of Muddy Waters just to name a few.

Wow great feedback, thanks! Coming from a place with a teeny tiny Blues Club this forum is fantastic for anything Blues.

Maybe I just might give my recovery an extra two weeks before I return to work

I just watched these and was dumb-struck by the performances. So glad someone kept the video all these years!!!

Martin Scorsese presents The Blues - A Musical Journey, from the parts I saw on Public Television was very good too.

B.B Kings autobiography "Blues All Around Me" is a pretty good read. Its not just an insight into his life but into the whole Delta and Memphis scene.

Your local public Library can interlibrary loan a copy from most any library in the country that has a copy, or.....Amazon...
