I listen mostly to retro rock from the 60's, 70's, and 80's, which is what I play professionally. Heavy into Deep Purple, Joe Lynn Turner, Bad Co, etc.
I pretty much tune out most modern music. When I was growing up as a "bar star" we had our shortcomings and faults, but for the most part you had to be able to play and sing. I'm pretty appalled by the number of acts in modern music around whom most of my students can play circles. I will say this: modern rock has two great things going for it: 1) most of the drummers are rock solid and in the pocket and 2) the antiquated art of just one rythmn guitar player banging on an acoustic has been resurrected. I love that sound! In a good mix, it's almost as if the guitar is more of a percussion instrument than something on which chords are played. Anyway, that's my two cents worth--call me a grumpy old guitarist.

well, i don't really believe in genres, so here's just a list of the people I listen to:
My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Good Charlotte, The All American Rejects, Snow Patrol, The Fray, The Academy Is..., Incubus, SAOSIN, 30 Seconds to Mars, Linkin Park, Jason Mraz, Marc Broussard, um.... let me think, Papa Roach, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and whatever happens to be playing on the radio

My absolute favorite band is The Black Crowes and their solo projects included. (Marc Ford is an amazing guitar player)

Also classic rock, southern rock, and old country with an occasional day or 2 a month of bluegrass.

Don't listen to the radio anymore except for XM deep tracks at work. Other than that I am diggin on the cd player.

I listen to Rock, Oldies, some country, Traditional New Mexican Music (Spanish), I love to listen to the blues and even some old standard on occasion. Pretty much everything but Rap. Right now I have been listening to a lot of John Mayer.

^ i'll listen to some hip hop and rap... it's jsut most of it is so bland and gerallized for radio play that is has no meaning and just defaces people in the lyrics... i don't want to hear every other word as a swear word or such, i'll listen to rap that has a good beat and the lyrics actually mean something to the artist and to me, but songs like "this is why i'm hot" i can't stand

lol, i know the feeling. the Black Eye Peas are pretty ok, and i can handle Eminem some of the time, but give me Green Day or My Chem, and i'm happy.

i really don't believe in genres... their too constricting. they're just narrow-minded pathetic attempts by narrowminded pathetic people to classify something that shouldn't be classified, but rather just enjoyed...
