Look around for a used one or you could look into one of their solid state amps that are in that price range.Of all the S/S amps Marshall and Vox are the most tubelike in tone. Look up their website to become more aquainted with them. http://www.marshallamps.com/

He could always buy himself a Behringer half-stack and a set of Marshall covers.

Then at least folks would think he owned a Super Lead Plexi......

(at least until he unpacked for a gig!)

And of course a Fender guitar case for the Jay Turser Strat copy.

Check out the Marshall Class 5. Its 5 watts and made in the UK. It sells for $399 or less.

You can crank it up and get a bluesbreaker tone.

Hi guitslinger: though as a Marshall man through and through I could never find one of their solid state amps that sounded anything like their real tube/valve machines for drive tones. The Valvestate models probably come closest - but not close enough.

I'd echo those saying save some more pennies. And then look at the smaller valve Marshalls - the Class5 is fabulous and will cover all practice and small gig requirements beautifully. I don't have experience of the Haze amps, but several folks here have spoken well of them so I'm sure they're worth checking out too.

You seldom hear tone-hound talk from me, but as far as amps are concerned it just has to have some glass bottles inside to do what it should, in my very humble opinion.

Cheers - C
