went to go see a friend at GC today. got there and he had left early.
hes just got in on another band and hes go some touring to do so hes busy in the details.
so im looking at whats new, whats old, and at whatever.
so my g.friend and i are in the platinum room when this guy walks up to me.
says he knew me from way back and wanted to say hello.
then he asks me if he could take the opportunity to ask me a few questions about a could guitars. said he wanted to make a little investment and just wanted an opinion that was 3rd party. ok ask away i said. we were looking at two Les Paul customs up high and out of pimple popper range. one was blk one was white. which one would you pick he asked. i told him right off that i would have to play each and see, that both were beautiful guitars.
they were roughly 5K each. he said he was looking at a different guitar but these two really caught his eye. so through small talk i came to realize this guy cant play guitar.
so i asked him just so i could clear my mind on it. sure enough i was right, the guy said he didnt play period, that it was an investment purchase.
so i went through my spill about buying guitars as a investment. its really not a good sound deal unless you buy in at a stupid price, but even then there are super high risks.
i took him into the platinum room and showed him a select few guitars and explained a few things there. so he kept pacing the floor thinking. he didnt know what he wanted to do. then we were back out to the original 2 LP's. thinking thinking thinking.
so he wanted me to see the "limited" gibson he was there to look at in the first place. it was behind the counter. so he grabs it to show it to me. just as i got it in hand and was looking at it the seels guy comes over and tells the guy they cant find the adaptor cord.
im like adaptor for what? he says its the self tuning. i right away gave it back to the sells guy and backed away. never hit the first note even.
the guy was explaining to me that he could get a great deal on it if he used credit and the payments were $200 a month. i couldnt believe it.
you want to buy a guitar as an investment, dont know how to play, cant afford it other than credit, and want to gamble your cash on the robo gibson. (lol OMG)
i couldnt believe it. he was really pacing the floors about it too.
i think he knew better but............
i think whats happened is somebody he knows and respects has a guitar that has probably gone up in value some and was showing it to him. "heck it cost $289 back in 1969, now its worth......." or something like that. we was swormed by sells guys and the manager in a split second after they saw me grab the guitar and start looking. i guys they knew i would set the guy straight rightaway if i had the chance to talk with him. so i just backed away. i hope the guy learned a lil something the short time we talked about guitars and investing in them with great hopes lol. when i left which was minutes after, he was still at the counter with all the sells team around him. that was 30 minutes ago. i wonder if the guys credit card it smokin or he actually thought this thing through?

I've seen a Gibson Robot Guitar used at Guitar Center for under $2000. That would be an incredibly horrible investment if he got it. Any new guitar is really, but especially that one.

I'm guessing in this day and age, the only way someone is going to find an investment grade guitar is if they luck out and find something that's been stashed under Grandpa's bed for the last 30 years.

Way Cool - you think?

exactly TGS. ive heard way to many bad stories about them.
they said that the plug for the guitar was only comes with the guitar and you cant buy a replacement, do you know if thats true? they told the guy that the plug was missing
and that they had several guys in the back looking for it, that they couldnt sell the guitar w/o it.

yep RickyD, thats one of the better ways anyway, but ive used others as well.

yeah. the funny thing was you could really see it in his face that he knew better too. he was fighting it. his wife was just standing there with this blank look on her face. i dont know if that was her just not knowing, or knowing and not believing what she was seeing lol. a fool and his $$ shall soon part. i wonder if he bought the thing? i tried to educate him in the time permitted arjay.

What kind of Les Paul Customs were 5K? Year etc...

nevin i honestly dont know if the were even customs to be very honest. they were way up on the top rack, and we were standing back about 40 feet. i didnt realize at the time he was getting my advice w/o wanting the sells guys to know about it. i kinda realized it at the end when we quickly went to the counter and he showed me the robo gibson. it was then all of a sudden we were swarmed by the sells guys and the manager. im guessing that they wanted to secure their idiot. let me go to the GC site and see if i can find the guitars im talking about. they had a very nice headstock mother of pearl display to them.
i'll know them when i see them. im not a gibson guy so im always wrong on the model names of the higher end stuff. let me go see real quick.

You did your best, no doubt about it.

Personally, I would've taken him into the restroom for a little "wall to wall counseling" but that's just me (still wearing my GI-issue "NCO" headgear).

well crap. there are a few pics missing on this page. going off what im seeing these must have been reissues. that sucks cause i always wanted to take a minute to try one of these out. i had the time today to do it too. crap. i'll tell you what nevin, i'll call tomorrow and ask them what those two guitars are. they will know right away which 2 im talking about.
there were no others that looked like these. they were side by side one blk one white.
at about 40 feet away they looked very nice. the guy told me that some kid/teen had asked to play it and they told him flat out no lol. i love it.
now im very curious as well. they has a goldtop in the platimun room i got to play. it was a 60 reissue im guessing. said 60 on the pickguard anyways.
i dont see the robo either just skimming through. it was like a redish color with a white binding around it. very different looking altogether actually.

i honestly think if i were to hold him his wife would have done that.
seriously arjay, this woman was pal white in the face. i think she was really worried about the situation, my g.friend did too. as i was walking out they were surrounded like i said. i made eye contact with the wife and gave her the big head shake NO. she smiled. we waited outside for about 20 minutes but they never came out.
i tried my darnest to get him to buy either in the platinum room or to invest in
gold, bonds, or a nice CD at his favorite bank. i dont know if it got through. it was just a funny experience, that honestly, wasnt so funny if you were there seeing it.
oh they have some nice stuff in that platinum room arjay. woo-wee!
they have a 65deluxe in there too. no tag on it as far as price though. they had a 57 champ tweed too. for some reason ron wood stuck in my mind as i was looking it over.
thats what i was looking at when the genius found me.
man when i told you i was headed out to GC i wasnt expecting this guy lol.

If I were to get a goldtop, it would be a '54 Reissue.

just beautiful nevin. im gonna call on these. im to curious. im scanning the web looking for them now too. they were beautiful indeed, but what gibson LP isnt at that price?
but yes thats the type of headstock inlay they both had. i love that look.

You can find many of the higher end reissues at good prices used. You can find plenty of R9's and R8's.... lots of R7's... the common models. It is harder to find some reissues since they make very few.

About 2,000 +/- 1959 Reissues are made every year now.

About 200 1954 Goldtop reissues are made every year now.

These guitars are phenomenal though. Worth the money for the right one IMO. Gibson is changing specs all the time which makes it very hard to keep track of all the models. They throw out quite a few limited runs and I have heard that you can do custom orders now... I am sure it is outrageously expensive though.

i agree. to many models, just like fender does.
back in the day you had the studio, standard, and the custom. thats all i ever paid attention too. its still in my head that way. if its high end, my brain says custom right away.

Uh......back in my day, they made three Les Pauls.

The "standard", the "custom", and the "junior".

Period!
