My final words on this matter: Rock in mainstream is dying quick, but true rock will always be alive as long as there are rebellious teens in garages wailing away $@!&#* covers and decent originals making the neighbors angry in a true raw form

We are at an interesting time, after the extensive investigation, exploration, and innovation in music of the past 100 years. There may be fewer, obvious, new directions to discover. Concurrently, almost anyone can participate, record, and disseminate. The venues for exposure have increased many fold, but many of these venues are impersonal and depend on the chance someone will stumble across them. It will be harder for an Elvis or a Beatles to emerge.
OK, now at the risk of being black-balled from the forum, I think a philosophical argument can be made that the evolution of Modern [in the construct of Modernity] music culminated with the Beatles. Music after the Beatles, the same as Art after Andy Warhol, is different and can be considered Post-modern( ref. The End of Art, Kuspit, and After The End Of Art, Danto). If you study Contemporary Art, you will see a correlation between the paths all the arts have followed since the mid-sixties. I am not saying the Beatles were the best band in history, rather that the aesthetic they brought to the music, and the impact it had on the music industry, the arts, fashion, and culture was an event that changed everything.

I think there is something to this argument. The Beatles were as wildly successful as they were, not only because they were gifted songwriters, but because they were in the right place at the right time. The still-relatively new medium of television and the rising youth culture of the '60s combined to help turn the Beatles into mega-stars. They filled a cultural role, in a way. And if John, Paul, George and Ringo hadn't decided to form a band, some other band would have come around to fill that same roll.

There probably will not be another Beatles or Elvis or Led Zeppelin, at least in terms of popularity and effect on mass culture; but there is still plenty of great new music being made out there. You can go to bars and clubs in virtually any town in the country and find talented musicians. Unfortunately most of that great music is not being played on the radio or on TV.

This is a great thread! Much cause for reflection.

It will take some thought to respond properly.

Remember, SURF is a descendant of rock which is very alive and very well, thank you.

Meshugga Beach Party, The Mermen, Hapa, Satan's Pilgrims, Man Or Astroman, The Blue Hawaiians, The Vanduras, Space Cossacks, Bomboras, Gary Hoey, among others, are still producing excellent, new music.

Tune into the Cudra Clover Exotica Hour podcasts from Maui and truly dig some of the new surf tunes.
