ok guys i know this may sound like another one of my GAS attacks... and it is but it is also pretty logical considering it to be cheaper than my cv 50 strat idea and it is gorgeous... i was thinking of getting one of these...

the epiphone g-400 sg in worn walnut finish...

not sure i'm getting it yet i'm too into my strat idea and like i said this could just be another GAS attack... well anyways i just want to know if there are any physical diferences between a gibson sg and an epiphone sg (like fender does with lower end squiers)

I have the 3 pup version, the G-400 Custom and it's a gem of a guitar.THe pups are just great and the guitar is a real screamer when pumped through a Marshall or any other Hi-gain amp yet I can get nice warm blues and jazz tones aand if you roll off the tone on the bridge pup you can get into "woman tone"territory. If you don't mind the neck dive of it it's a fabulous guitar for the money-a much better bet than its Gibson counterpart.

Nevin I wasn't implying that Gibson was overpriced junk,I was just saying that the Epi gives you more bang for the buck.Gibsons have increased more in price recently than any of its competitors and they have been having more than the usual quality control issues lately too.I'd love to have a Gibson Les Paul Trad Pro and Firebird V but the Epi alternatives I have are so great I can't see a Gibson being so much better as to warrant it and considering the quality problems my buddy has been having with his Les Paul-which he can't get properly fixed under warranty-I feel comfortable that I made the right choice.

I buddy of mine had a g400 back in the day, I played it off and on; it wasn't bad at all. I'm with Nevin though, there's a world of difference between a Strat and an SG.

I just bought the Epiphone G-400 (Cherry finish) a couple of weeks ago. The only big problem I encountered is that the G-400 is VERY neck heavy when compared to it's Gibson counterpart. While a Wide strap with a rough backside helps a lot when playing standing up, it doesn't overcome the problem completely. I also think that the pickups are not as full sounding as those on the Gibson. With that said, the G-400 is still a lot of fun to play (sitting down for me) and I feel it is well worth the $349. If possible though, I would try them both out on the amp of your choice before you decide.

If I was in the market for an SG and I was a Fender guy... this is what I would look into:

Gibson 60's tribute SG. 700 bucks give or take.

Nice! I love the gritty tone of a P90.

yeah i can't try them since i'm seeing them online but i might install my ol jb on the g-400 anyways if i go with it... i'm personally still leaning towards the strat... (not only is it my safe bet/comfort zone cause of the difference in supposed weight distribution but i've been planning the project for ages)... i'm still having difficulties in finding a decent black 3-ply hss pickguard that fits plus now that i have the new band i'm desperate to give the new humucker tone a shot... but i guess i can wait another 100 euros (note that i'm counting in cash and not time)
