heck he might have been studying this type of music all his young life.
ok hes good indeed but does that make him a "prodigy" um..... nope.

+1 He's really good at what he does and he's a lot better than me, but not a prodigy. He's probably been playing since he was 3 years old and had some tiger parents hovering over him to be sure he stays on course.
There's a little girl up the street from me who plays the violin. I photographed her for promo materials. She's a huge deal in China and has been accepted to Julliard. She's 16 now. If you start early and stay dedicated, by the time you're 16, you have 10 or 12 years of intense training under your belt. It make you practiced not a prodigy.

This is so wrong I don't even know how to respond to it........

But regardless, he's good, but his playing is too robotic, it has no soul, no emotion. He does all these weird little fills, all this improv, yet he still can't make the music his own.

   wow, ummmmm, didn't see that comeing...

Super Kid... I agree with you.. God forbid you give honest feedback on this list that is critical...

Super kid, I'v been meaning to ask you a question.

Do you take lessons? I'm 13 now, got my first guitar at age 12 and tinkered around with it for like 8 months and started taking lessons in August because I wanted to get serious.

A word of advice grasshoppers, take lessons, learn music theory and if possible, learn to sight read. It will make you a much more versatile and rounded player. I didn't, and now I'm a geezer with a lot of bad playing habits and limited abilities. I can play blues that can make you smile and cry and some really aggressive rock, but I'm pretty lost on Jazz. I have many more friends in the same boat. One is an incredible player as long as it's Classic Rock. Venture outside that and you find his limitations. I wish i gotten more into Jazz and Classical music as well as "Chicken Pickin". Another plus is if you know all this stuff, you can teach and make some cash.

I started playing much later than you (at age 19)...I had the same attitude, but possibly for different reasons.

I was determined to be a "bluesman" and believed since Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and many of my heroes had not taken lessons, I shouldn't do so either...plus, I wanted to develop my own style, not become a clone of a particular teacher.

Also, at the time I started playing, many/most of the instructors in my area were shredders who worshipped at the Altar of Yngwie, and that definitely wasn't in my gameplan...many of them had the attitude of, "Why would I try to inject some soul into my playing? I can play 42 million notes per measure!"

I developed bad habits galore (I still can't play a C-chord right) and limited understanding of music theory.

Eventually I hit a plateau that lasted for a couple of years, so I sought out an instructor that fit my desires as a player. I made more progress in three months than I had made in three years. Little things that were lost on me became clear and fell into place much more easily.

...and this instruction helped to define and develop my own style even further.

This is basically the same thing for me, I'm 16 and when I got my first guitar 2 and a half years ago I just felt like teaching myself and I was able to do single note riffs really well after 6 months but I couldn't get chords for anything. I was then encouraged by a friend to take lessons and had them for 8 months.

During those 8 months I learned more then I could have hoped to learn without someone to guide me. The only reason I no longer take lessons is that I moved to a different city and we can no longer afford it.

On the matter of lessons not allowing you to develop your own style, that's not true at all depending on the teacher. My teacher asked me on the first day what type of music I liked and from there he chose some things that would prepare me to eventually get there, I wanted to play classic rock and he gave me some blues stuff that helped allot later on. The thing that really helped with me becoming my own player is he taught me a bunch of scales and such and we worked on my improvisation which has now allowed me to write a couple of songs. The lessons also made me so good at improv that last year at an art fair (I was the leader of guitar club) me and a couple of friends that played guitar together were asked to participate and I was asked to improvise on most songs (I did play rhythm on a couple).

In conclusion lessons are great and help you become a great player much faster then if you taught yourself, and that's a fact.

I'm lucky enough to have a teacher who's the guitarist for the biggest ska band in the state and a damn good jazz player. I learn a lot of stuff that is traditionally applied to jazz and then apply it to my own music, sounds cool. 8)

But you never see any of those "prodigy" kids grow up to be famous though.

Still you gotta love the Jaggermeister strap:
