I've always liked the sound of those, but I'm not sure if I've ever actually ever seen one before. Reminds me of old sci fi movies from the 50s!

I just went to the Musical Instrument Museum in Scottsdale, AZ. There is a small Theremin exhibit, with an old instrument, history and some technical info. Pretty cool! It was used to great effect in "Forbidden Planet".

Some top musicians are still using theremins, so, if you've never seen one, take a look.
A real cool dude demonstrating here. 8)

Thanks for the smile Rhumba, I have seen those before, at The Note on Milwaukee across the street from The Double Door. A Bro a B-3 a theramin and a mic. Rock and roll gospel with some voodoo rhythms and that theramin got it real spooky sometimes 8)

adey, "We're all guitarists here, so look at this, but don't fall in love. Moog guitars cost a fortune:

The guy from NYC that played on Ryan Adams first album (not to be confused with Bryan Adams) is a very good theremin player. Saw him on tour and he used it in a couple of songs along with his white Gretsch Falcon.

How hard are they to make? They can't be that difficult. A aerial and a circuit, outed to a Marshall with some throwaway kids toy turned effects pedal in between.

Perhaps that will bring about the Mayan apocalypse.

Hi Rip,
I'm pretty sure I've seen a youtube vid of Joe using one, I think he was performing Sloe Gin at the time. I was also reading an interview somewhere a while back and he said he used his Theremin on the Ballad of John Henry album.
The old Doctor Who, yes! I'm pretty sure they did.
Now then, during haloween they always have some pointy hats with attached wigs on sale in the Co-op, so I'll have to wait while then. It's a long time off that though eh?
Anyway, never mind, I've ordered one and it's winging it's way to me as we speak. So I'll see what it can do when it gets here, or should I say 'what I can do' :D
Eagerly awaiting it's arrival, I'll let you know how it goes. 8)

No theremin in the old Dr Who theme apparently.

Eileen Derbyshire from the BBC Radiophonics Workshop used a treated piano tape loop (the groaning sound of the Tardis was created by dragging a key down a few bass strings) and an early EMS synthi hi fi for the main theme. An old Ondes Martenot may have also been used (she could no longer recall).

Hear it on any number of sci fi 40s and 50s B movies though.

Making them is apparently the easy part. Calibration is supposed to be the challenge!

Oh well it must have been some other theme tune I was thinking of Adey, I'm sure I seen it demonstrated on some prog or other Tomorrows world most likely doing some theme tune, my mind's gone blank..................I knew they weren't a recent invention Adey didn't realize they were around in the 40's & 50's though 8) cheers

Hi Rhumba: you gotta go for it! :D

I must admit, I can't recall ever hearing anything very tuneful coming out of a theremin. But I always wanted one just so's I could leave it set up near the front door, so when visitors go to hang up their coats, suddenly... inexplicable screechy alien noises fill the air. Cue visitors jumping out of their skins with looks on their faces of "what the...?"

Cheers - C

Yeah!! that surprised me too about Doctor Who but Rip, these things were around in the 1920's.
I'm beginning to think again about Tomita and his 'Snowflakes Are Dancing' he might have just used synths, I'll have to try and check that out.
