Hi Tim: it's an excellent way of recording the fact of your composition of a song. But in any legal sense it is not the "registering" of copyright - because such an act doesn't exist in law. In the way that it does exist with patents or trademarks.

You already own the copyright by the mere act of creating the song. That's the point.

But if you ever need to prove it in court - that's a different point, and the one you are in fact addressing. If you have lodged your compositions with the Library of Congress - or any one of many other such libraries - then that is an excellent and highly recommended way of future-proofing your ownership. Very sensible.

And just in case anyone's wondering, though there are small differences of detail between territories, copyright law works essentially the same way in all western countries, and indeed most others around the world. So nobody needs to wonder whether this stuff is different where they live.

Now. Get those songs out there and start earning some royalties! :)

Cheers - C

In the songwriting world, there's hardly a writer worth his salt that hasn't been ripped off at one time or another.
I haven't had a song stolen,the ones I've written aren't worth the effort.

Please excuse me for not being more specific. That was the point I was addressing, that submitting ones work to the library of congress, is the only way to legally protect that work should ownership come under dispute. I understand that my work is already my intellectual property before being submitted to the library of congress, but I like to have that extra security of black and white documents that prove I wrote the song in question.
As for royalties from my music? Probably not, I enjoy the hobbyist side of being a musician much more these days, and don't honestly know that I even want to get sucked into the black hole of the music industry. Believe me, I had visions of grandeur in the past, but it was all a little bit of tunnel vision. 8)

I thought I read an 'I'm outta here drama queen' thread you started. How did that work out for ya killer?

Nevermind, you don't have to answer. It's not the PTSD from your vast combat experience that makes you a liar. It's just your PMS.

I never said anything about 'vast combat experience', I went on one deployment, never made any claims of anything more.
Seriously, I'm through with this conversation, it's not worth my time.

Tim,

Thanks for your service! Comments like DHD's are completely out of bounds.

P.S. - I sense the presence of Arkman

Thanks Beckologist. I appreciate it. I'm not worried about what anybody says negative, I'm nothing but proud of my military career. Comments like his just show the level of intelligence involved.

My wife and I did this several years ago. It was an easy process with the Library of Congress. Sorry, I can't remember exactly, but we sent a tape of 25-30 songs along with words typed out. We got a letter back from The Library of Congress asking for additional information, ie "These songs look like they came from the Bible. Are they adaptations?" We said, yes they are and that was that. They sent us some sort of conformation. I can research their website and find our songs. I don't know how much, if any, protection there is. We don't care. Someone just told us to do it.

Heya, Mike. Good addition to this thread.

One more example how songwriters and performers find themselves in a new corner for protection. A lot of power players are making that pie, and it all gets sliced up and passed out. Hopefully, one will get a big slice before it gets eaten up, or before a new one is made with agreements and treaties,

Something artists and writers often overlook are trademarks, and that’s a whole different story that, when it comes to claim of ownership of lyrics (and to a much lesser extent titles), trademark can come up when royalties are passed around.

Just one more current look at the mumbo jumbo of copyright/trademark:
