Last night Blinkers dropped by with his newly acquired early 1980's rosewood neck Tokai 50 Strat. The action and neck relief were so bad it was almost unplayable.I took off the neck and backed off the truss rod by about 1/2 a turn and that was all it took aside from lowering the saddles. From the hotness of the pups I surmise that the 50 connotation must denote a 50s style pickup design as its pups are a lot brighter and not nearly as mellow as his 60 maple neck one.Anyway I'm surprised by the sound of both guitars and the build quality make no wonder that American guitar makers did a bit of shaking in their boots back in those days. The 60 has the bell like out of phase tone of the L series too.

thats pretty cool I've always wanted to try a Tokai strat, and maybe do like a side by side comparison...

(but then again, it wouldn't be right unless I could compare it to Fender strats made around the same time as the Tokai) 8)

One of the worst things I did was get rid of a 81 Tokai Breezysound (Tele).
At fifteen I worked a job doing door to door sales, all summer long, just to buy that guitar. A luthier that lived down my street compared it side by side to his 52 Tele. Said, "sort the pickups out and it's better than mine".

These days it's all about where you get em from. The Korean ones aint as good as the Japanese ones. The pickups are a lot better these days thankfully.

Yep they do Stratobobster.
They also called them the Goldstar sound, when they decided that Springy sound was a bit of a childish name (though I think it's great). Then around 83 just went on to give them ST or T on the tele, codes.
Now they use both Springy, Goldstar and ST codes on the strats.
