I Can't read sheet music or tabs but am still in a band. It's more fun to buy an album, listen to it and then learn to play, because you can also throw in little bits of improvised soloing every now and again!

I use my Ear mostly. Tabs you get from the net are usually so wrong they should be labeled "Best Guesses". Besides Good Tab Books from the shelf I haven't found a reliable Tab source since "Guitar for the Practicing Musician" turned into "Guitar One".

This a a Retraction, of sorts-
There's a Foot in my Mouth, and judging by it's Size and Taste, it's mine. I posted this comment on Friday and went to the store. In the Magazine Rack, I see a Magazine called "Guitar Edge" (subtitled, "Less Talk, More Tab"), open it up and find It's Full of Great Tunes and Accurate Tab. Everything from Howlin' Wolf to Mudvayne, Iron Maiden to Beastie Boys. Even Wes Montgomery  If only they had Bass Tab, it would be Cooler than Guitar for the Practicing Musician was. I hope "Guitar Edge" raises the Bar on mags like Guitar Player and Guitar World. But still rely on Your Ear most.

One more thought on the subject, however. When you sit down with a band you haven't sat in with before and they start in on a tune you're not familiar with, you won't find them handing out any Tab. You better be able to use your Ears, or it's Embarrassment City

Cliff Notes Version-

"Guitar Edge" is a Great New Magazine for Tablature, but there's no substitute for a Trained Ear.

I use both. I try mostly to play by ear though because it's kinda cool to ba able to hear something and in a little while be able to play it. Its more of a challenge too. Plus if there's a riff that you hear then you can tell what key it's in.

I started out as a drummer in several bands. I took lessons for that and read music. The members of those bands began showing me how to play guitar. So.......all my guitar playing, since then, is by ear. (never took any lessons)

I'm also very good playing a piano by ear.

So....I guess that makes me an ear guy.
