What about standard notation and also chord charts and the option of using all or a combination ?

I play mostly by ear but if I can't figure something out I'll search for the tab.

Nothing wrong with either method.

I learn most songs by ear. Sometimes I use tabs if I feel that learning it that way will be faster.

I use both. But mainly tabs. I'm just learning to play by ear.

Missing the option of "I read the music".

I'm just now trying to figure out tabs, seems a lot easier to just read the score.
For a guitar you only need to read the treble clef and a lower ledger line. :) not too complicated :)

Mostly by ear, I use tabs for reinforcement purposes since I would rather figure it out by myself.

I use my Ear mostly. Tabs you get from the net are usually so wrong they should be labeled "Best Guesses". Besides Good Tab Books from the shelf I haven't found a reliable Tab source since "Guitar for the Practicing Musician" turned into "Guitar One".

Sometimes I'll look up a tab, just to see how wrong it is, and that points my ear in the right direction. For Example Zep's "In The Evening" Riff was giving me trouble, so I figured, "Maybe someone on line has done the work for me." and I looked it up. The tab showed a Power Chord being played on the 7th fret, moved to the 5th fret, then back to the 7th fret. While this riff can be played along with "In The Evening", it is not "In The Evening". Something inside me said, "That's not how you play it, its obviously this Blues Lick with Wammy Bar." The Blues Lick being the one John Fogerty relies on for most of his popular work like "Green River".

The last thing I looked up on line was Hoyt Axton's "Dellah and the Dealer." Not only was it in the wrong key, but the wrong Chord Run. Which is A-D, C-F-D-A for the verse, A-D-E-A for the chorus.
