Here's a little insight for you from one of my author friends. She writes poetry and is quite well published, globally.
She explained to me (in a bid to get me back writing) that inspiration lands and needs a outlet. Whether it be music, painting, writing. That the creator doesn't own the piece is merely a conduit for it and therefore has no right to withhold it from the masses. Basically she was trying to stop me being so judgmental about anything I write or compose and just put it out. But her statement had a huge effect on me that has altered a lot of my opinions on many aspects of my life.

Now that said, if you were to present something of importance, would you not want everything to do with that presentation, visual effect, delivery, choreography all be delivered with the utmost precision?
I'd want it to be delivered in the way that best gets the piece across. Look at any guitar great. Hendrix, Vaughn, Clapton, Gilmour, Wood/Taylor/Jones and Richards. What you see them guys wearing onstage is as much a uniform as anything else. Designed to fit the music they were playing for the era they were/are playing. Just because it doesn't look like one, doesn't mean it isn't one.

The appearance aspect of performing musicians has been a huge factor since the 1930's from what I can see. It probably dates back a lot further into the past. All them country bands, all the 50's rock'n'rollers, the Beatles, the Stones. Just about every band that ever did big, had a stylized appearance.

In the 60's cords were cool/light blue/dark blue/tan/gray/black/green/white & all cut like501's. Paisley was also a big hit. You guys were right in style. :)

I'm quite taken by that old picture of Mike's band. It portrays a lot of the simplicity and placid nature almost to the point of serenity that I love about what I'm told of that era. Much like Doc's pictures of his band from the fifties. Different time, different place.

Danny you're right, my friend offers the best advice. It's a mindset worth thinking about. I see it permeating every area of my life now.
