Are they waste of money?

Like to have one one day contribute a climate preservation, but not sure if they are the right answer.

You bet there a waste of money. To much restriction of use. Check out the replacement cost of a set if bateries/the time between charges /the availablity of charging places/the cost of a charge/ and oh yes, Where did the charge come from? probably a fossal fule fired power plant.
There are lots of renewable fuel alternatives out there to explore. How about a hydrigen powered vehical that produces its own electricity? Then maby you have a keeper. :) :)

While the initial amount of pollution from a hybrid or electric car will be less than an internal combustion engine, the environmental impact of the byproducts from recycling depleted batteries will be greater and longer-lasting.

A well-maintained internal combustion engine will impact the environment less in the long run...

Hi Danny: that's electric cars you're thinking of rather than hybrids. The point of a hybrid is exactly that you don't have to charge it.

My wife had a fully electric car - for four weeks. A fatuous mobile dumpster designed in California and built in India, called a G-Wiz. Gee-whiz it was awful, in all the ways you mentioned and many more. Within a month she took it back and demanded a full refund under her statutory rights in light of its failure to perform as the maker claimed. It was crap.

However, since then for the last five years she's had a Toyota Prius, which is a hybrid: i.e. petrol plus electric.

Just the other day I noticed a Forum user - 53magnatone, was it? - saying you couldn't pay him enough to drive a Prius. It ain't exactly rock and roll, that is true. On the other hand, the hybrid technology does indeed perform as claimed; while it surely ain't a race car it drives as well as any comparable middle-sized fully petrol model; it has been very reliable over five years and it saves us a lakeful of fuel. Which is the point.

We also have had a Jaguar for the last ten years. I love it, it's the best car I ever owned - and we've just last week finally sold it and bought... a second Prius. A two Prius family - yes indeed, that's how uncool we are. These Priuses (Prii?) drink exactly half the gas the Jag gobbled its way through. It adds up.

I hate myself for caring about it, but it's time cars got less thirsty. Hybrid has been around for a decade now and it's about time a few more manufacturers caught up and challenged the Japanese at the game they've been winning hands down so far.

I notice Rolls-Royce have recently been demo'ing a hybrid Phantom across Europe. Like it or not it's now a mainstream technology and makers who don't offer it will soon look like ones who haven't discovered electric windows. Time to move forwards.

Cheers - C

i don't get the excitement about the chevy volt.

the car goes for around 40 grand, less the 7000 that the gov't gives you back.

you can buy a ford focus or fusion in the 18-24k range. take the extra 9000 or so you save on the car and it buys a lot of gas. add the cost of replacement batteries , and you won't find me near one.

as far as the smart car goes- you save the earth, i'll save my dignity

Last I heard, Chevy has sold a whopping 1,700 of the Volts... (barely) enough to cover the original R&D costs.

OH and that Vette gets 30 mpg on the highway too! I can live with that. By the way I was not bragging, just merely a big fan of Corvettes so roll your eyes at someone else...I am entitled to MHO!

+1.

What I think people fail to realize is that a huge percentage of electricity is produced by burning petroleum based fuels. In fact, I heard once that more greenhouse gases are produced in creating the electricity to power an electric car than would be produced by driving a petro fueled car anyhow. Hybrids I like the concept of, but lots of cash to fix them. I'll stick to my fossil fuels until someone can create a viable, mass-produced hydrogen fuel cell car.
Or bio-diesel's a pretty good way to go if possible.
