My Mum taught me how to play recorder when I was 3!!!! Was able to read music before I could read words. Moved through various different instruments till I found drums at about 9 then guitar a year later. Been my downfall ever since!!

I was around 4 or 5 when I was given a pair of bongos. I beat those until the skins wore through. Then around 10 yrs old I played ukelele and then a year or 2 after that alto sax. I didn't stick with the sax, and then at about 17 picked up the guitar. It will be 20 yrs now since I started playing guitar. I should be sooo much better!

I was 15 when I first started playing. I was inspired to get a guitar after listening to the Led Zeppelin albums in my parents' record collection. I saved up money from my part time job and bought a Hondo Les Paul copy and practice amp. Started taking lessons a couple months after realizing how ridiculously hard the instrument can be... :P

I was inspired by my older brother. All the girls in the neighborhood would come around when he played. That never happened when I played the violin.

The girls were a motivation for me learning to play, too. But I think any girlfriends I had in high school liked me **in spite** of my playing

I started when I was 11, My Grandpa was my insperation. I Loved him and his old guitar. When I was 11 I bought my first guitar, with money from selling news papers on the etreet. The rest is history. A (MUSIC TEACHER) once told Me to quit because my fingers were to short. I did just that, taking lessons from him that is.

My grandmother and my aunt taught me a few simple songs on piano when I was 7 or 8. Got my first guitar at 12.

My mother taught me my first song on piano when I was 4 or 5 and I got my first guitar for my 10th birthday in 1964,one month after seeing the Beatles for the first time but I never started learning in earnest until I was 12.I played guitar pretty regularly and took to it and progressed much faster than my friends who started when I did but it was when I heard Jimi for the first time that I got face and eyes into it and became an absolutely guitarded fanatic-playing sometimes 10 hours a day.I was bound and determined to become not merely competent,I wanted to leave people sitting in puddles.I've made some good money at it over the years so I must have done something right. All that playing plus a stint with weight training came back to bite me on the arse and now I'm fighting a condition much like the one that has sidelined Leona Boyd and has sent EVH for hand surgery.

A word to the wise:Too much of a good thing can hurt you, take care of your hands and make sure that you give your hands a chance to rest up and do whatever stretches and exercises you can to keep your hands and fingers limber.Don't learn the hard way and find out when it's too late like I did.

Took piano lessons from age 7 to 10. I never "got it"; my brother did "get it," and was a natural (irritatingly good). For some reason he never plays anymore, and hasn't for years.

I wanted a guitar but my parents wouldn't get me one.

Played the french horn in middle school, alternated between 1st and 2nd chair the entire time with another guy (Mike Schaub).

Also in choir in middle school, the shortest and skinniest baritone in the 8th grade.

Bought a guitar when I was nineteen, and impressed my parents so much by my ability and desire to play as well as the good grades I was getting in college, they bought me an electric (I picked it out, but they payed for it)...I still have both of those guitars.

Although I had dabbled with the instrument earlier, I started playing harmonica earnestly at age 21...I'm actually a better harp player than guitarist.

I started asking for a guitar when I was 12.

Finally got a guitar when I was 15.

Played in my first (all instrumental) band when I was 16.

This is me in early 1966:

Other guys had more expensive guitars, but my amps & equipment blew them away!

Cool pic, Dennis.

After my initial fiasco with the Teisco I bought a "road-worn" two-pickup Melody Maker. With my ninety-dollar '65 Fender Deluxe amp I thought I was all set. A year later I'd stepped up to a '66 Strat and a '67 Super Reverb (my first new Fender amp)......

My first "professional" gig, at age 16 (I think we each made ten bucks).

At the age of 8 my uncle took me to see Eric Clapton with Derek & the Dominos in Chicago...sometime in November 1970...he caught holy heck from my grandmother for it too.
Then it took me two years of pestering him to teach me some chords because I really liked Why Does Love Got to be so Sad, Little Wing, Let it Rain, and Have You Ever Loved A Woman so much.
He and my other three uncles had a rock band and practiced at my grandparents house. What a great time I had watching them and then learning enough to play guitar with them. Even my grandfather would sit in sometimes and play fiddle with us and we would do a couple country songs with him...yep good times...so 39 years of playing.
