Why do guitar strings need frequent replacement while a piano can go forever without going dead? I can see more bending and sweat that the guitar string is subject to, but nevertheless I can't see where it is that destructive to warrant the vast difference in their lifespan.

The salt in your sweat is probably the main reason for the quicker wear. Salt + Moisture + Metal = Corrosion.

Hi TVR: have you seen how much it costs to restring a piano? I wonder if that has something to do with it...

Cheers - C

Guitar strings are bent and streached when plucked.
Piano on the other hand are hamered and are not subjected to the same kind of stress.
On the other hand a harpsichord string is plucked like a guitar and do require more frequent replacement.
All stringed musical instruments spend a lifetime of constant Harmonic Vibration that causes eventual metal fatigue(or a breakdown of molecules). Some more than others. The regidity of the frame makes the difirence. Basic metallurgy 101, Again My openion :)

My hands and fingers don't sweat - genetic abnormality? I don't know, but I get more life out of my strings than anyone I know. My first bass player sweated so BAD that by the end of the night his entire guitar was covered with dried white sweat salt. It was awful. He used to come up to me between sets and ask if he could mess with my guitar - NFW!
