most of the beats are samples anyways. they can pull up a brand new beat in seconds.
its not like the beats used in rap are anything technical anyways.

I've got to respectfully disagree with that statment. The samples and loops are typically the last thing that go onto a beat, and A huge part of most rap beats come from what the creator of that beat is playing on a midi keyboard. Granted there are beats that are piles of samples thrown together, but the guys that get the most respect in the industry (Dr. Dre, Timbaland, Swizz Beats and even Scott Storch) put together some killer beats. And it won't be hard to find a Dre beat with no samples whatsoever in it. Just my 2 cents.

Dude, don't even try. This thread comes up every few months and it always results in the same outcome, all of the forum's elder statesmen saying the same tired $@!& about how rap isn't music.

The irony being they are probably saying the same thing THEIR parents said about rock and roll;)

For me it's not whether it's music or not, to me, generally speaking, it is overly repetitive, negative and greatly misogynistic.

I'm with adey on Gil Scott Heron!!! He was a true innovator.

Having a heavy metal background I got into House of Pain, Cypress Hill Funkdobeast and the like.........probably can't be described a s rap now but I loved that stuff....Everlast has had a couple of great albums since he went solo and newer stuff like Micahel Frantii and SPearhead is some clever, topical stuff.

You guys are all generalizing an entire genre based on a very small sampling of it.

Anyways, what do you guys use for beats? I've played around with Fruity Loops quite a bit.

Even got the strat samples plugin pack, lol.

tim,

MOST of the beats these days are just samples. the same beats over and over used by different rappers. a little of this added, a little of that taken out.
come out here to ATL and i'll take you to a few stops. you'll be suprised whats done in the matter of minutes. sure funk, flex, dre, and a few others are hard at work coming up with something different, but the majority is just looped crap.
think of how many rap song you know that use the same beats over and over.
different artists too. only the top 5% are getting anything fresh and new. nelly, outcast,
jayz, nas, k.west, lil wayne, ti. remind me to tell ya about that gun fight ti got into up in ohio a few yrs back. i saw it. what a trip. i'll shoot you a PM on it. (short story)

Look past the mainstream garbage of today and pretty much all of it is original.

Yeah I hear that most do just throw some samples together and call it a beat. (guys like Jay Z and P. Diddy come to mind) and a lot of rap from the south is pretty generic. T.I., retarded as he is sometimes is still one of my favorite rappers though.

+1 I still prefer a lot of the old guys.

I've been using Frooty Loops. I like the simple layout compared to CakeWalk Music Creator which I also have but it's rather difficult to use.
