Tyler said it was mostly to make sure he finished school and wouldn't drop out and go touring with Odd Future. Tyler, Hodgy, Frank Ocean, and MellowHype just did an east coast tour.

I know the general opinion here is that rap is "less than good", but I was wondering if anyone else here listens to any rap? IMO most mainstream rap these days IS completely talentless trash, however a lot of old rap and underground rap is REALLY good.

Some of my favorites:

Big Punisher
Terror Squad
NWA
old Snoop Dogg
Eminem
Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All
Tupac
Wu-Tang Clan

not a valid music form, IMHO YMMV.

"elevator music for the discontent", oh boo hoo hoo nobody likes me so let me rip some musicians rif and rhyme about how mistreated I am. A good description or not?

I love when people act like hip hop is the only genre to ever use any form of sampling, when 90%the time the sample gets remixed and chopped to the point where it IS an original piece.

Wasn't being sensible I suppose. I do possess some industrial recordings as well as some rap (Kottonmouth Kings are my favorite) I have some Outkast and some underground recordings and appreciate good house, rap and hip hop. The disappointment comes from the same source as bad any kind of music, when business men notice what sells then quantity goes up and quality goes down. Just sayin. If you listen to the good stuff, anyone over 21 should know what that means, then keep listening and don't think about who likes it or doesn't. Playing an instrument and/or actually singing is a different world and better for an artist in the long run because of the skill that you must develop to perform well. Which is why I posted it as a non-music form. Anyone can house, rap, hip hop, and some of the puppets doing those things aren't the nicest people. again IMHO YMMV

+1000. Anyone that thinks rap takes no talent should try putting a beat together and see how it sounds.

Rap? Sorry... I can't get into it today. It's too nasty, too harsh, too negative, etc... But I do remember this "old school" rap song from the Sugar Hill Gang.

Remember this? Rapper's Delight?

http://youtu.be/b6gD_CwF5YM

Everybody of every imaginable race and gender was up on the floor jamming to this...

If we all liked the same kind of music, it would be boring. I don't like
most rap/hip hop because it sounds too repetitious to me. That said, Fergie
can REALLY sing and although I'm not a fan of the Black Eyed Peas, I've
covered a couple of their tunes at times, but it was by request.

I'd like to see this as the next topic for people to post! I've got a few beats I've created, but I've got no lyrical flow. C'mon guys post your rap songs!

It's certainly not my cup of tea, but I catch the occasional gem. I guess Walk This Way is pretty much unforgettable. I liked Blondie's Rapture too. And Can't Touch This, by someone or other.

But like everything else, when it becomes formulaic it quickly outstays it's welcome.

I can't be doing with white guys who've had every advantage attempting to steal the form developed by certain underclasses, for whom Rap, Hip Hop etc is something that gave them a voice which which to be heard, and gave them an economic opportunity. On this basis, perhaps we should consider this sort of music as the new blues.. I regret that on many occasions it seems to slide so easily into mysogonistic nihilism, that glorifies the worst that Socity has to offer.

But while we're on the subject, let's remember the genuinely talented Gil Scott Heron who died recently. I adored his hypnotic "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" from the moment I first heard it..

Oh and God bless Bob Dylan too for his "Subterranian Homesick Blues"..

Both pieces can claim to be partial blueprints for what came to be known as rap/stream of conciousness/street poetry, call it what you will ...

Here's Gil Scott Heron's TRWNBT ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BS3QOtbW4m0
