I am pretty open and broad minded when it comes to music but for the life of me I can't get into either rap or hip hop.Granted there may be a message in the words of some of it but as far as it goes in a musical sense I just can't bear either one of them.To my ears rap is no more music than the "beat"poetry of the 60s was when a bongo player tapped out a beat to the rhythm of the poem.
There may be a place for rap but I believe that it's a stretch to call it music when so much of it is bits and pieces of existing songs spliced together.

The first rap I heard was Lenny Bruce...then Bob Dylan's Subteranean Homesick Blues then there was that Zappa fella.....and another guy named ah... Marley. ( I actually had to play "Can't Touch This" in a jam band every Sunday night for almost a year) :lol: :oops:

To me cRap shouldn't even be considered in the music catergory. Much of it (volgur/ obsense genre) shouldn't even be alowed to be sold to the public. IMHO

This is the rap that I really like. I was about 12 years old when I discovered The Beastie Boys and Run DMC. Then I got into other rappers like the the ones WCJ mentioned above, plus Public Enemy, NWA and Cypress Hill. I didn't realize at the time how heavily rap sampled James Brown and other funk artists. This must be why I love both James and funk to this day. I think the 80's/90's rappers had a major influence on what MUSIC I listen to today.

Even though I'm more Rock, I do listen to Rap sometimes.
I actually really love 2Pac's lyrics and the old Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre.
There's talent in every genre, you just need to find it.

as much of it thats out there, if ya gotta "look for the talent", then i
wont waste me time trying. if there is talent, you will know not very far
into the song.

To me it is ALL completely talentless trash. How one can differentiate, let alone rate gratuitous ranting over pounding is way beyond me. Further, if one looks up the definition of music, this inane drivel doesn't even fulfill the requirements to be considered music.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

I think rap is like a lot of today's electronic music; because you can do it without actually learning how to sing or play an instrument, there is probably a much higher percentage of 'bad musical product' on the market (performed by people of questionable musical talent) than there is in other musical genres. It's not that all rap is bad -- it's just that it's probably a lot harder to find 'good rap' than it is 'good blues' or 'good classical.'

I don't generally listen to rap, but I do like some artists, like De La Soul or the Beastie Boys.

And the terms 'rap and 'hip hop' should not be synonymous: The Roots, for example, are probably one of the best active bands around right now, period. Watch them on Jimmy Fallon if you don't believe me -- they can do it all!

I find myself getting bored during most rap songs, I might open a school of melodic development for rappers.
Saying that, I quite like some of Eminem's stuff.
There's still no comparison to beat poets;
