+1...I was told to gain weight when I went to MEPS the first time. That was hard for me to do at 18; I had the metabolism of a hummingbird.

You aren't lying about that JW toilet paper, B4L!

At least the C's sometimes came with fruit cocktail or canned peaches. And smokes.

Gawd, I hate lima beans! Always have.

About a week after I DEROSed back to the world from Vietnam a older married couple who were long-time friends of my parents invited me for dinner to celebrate my return. I wore my class A's since they were very patriotic and the husband had served in the AF with my father. The lady had prepared one of their favorite family "specialties" -- a horrid casserole consisting of swordfish and lima beans in a cheese-whiz type sauce. Not wanting to appear rude or ungrateful but desperate to sidestep this "culinary delight", I took the only tactical option available......as we dined, I filled the waist pockets of my jacket with the entree when they weren't looking.

BTW I did my basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood too.

Lost in the woods huh? I've never been there but I heard it's delightful in the summertime     I did basic at Ft. Knox...never been anywhere else like it. Seems to rain on schedule every morning for about 15 minutes...just long enough to keep the humidity lingering above 90% when the sun came out.

Tim,
Imagine where I am right now...Ft Benning..the school for wayward boys! They moved the Armor Schoold down here from Knox and man is it funny hearing people snivel about the heat and humidity. The folks who came down form Knox said "Oh it doesn't get hot at Benning" Now that the summer is in full swing they are saying that Knox was down right comfy compared to here...LOL For me the meal that killed me was the old Chicken A la King...it was like paste with chunks of not sure and add some pepper...LOL

What strikes me the funiest about GI FOOD, is that when we were going through our Militery experience we hated it, at least most of us said we did. Now in some cases many years later, those memories are some of the fondest of our lives. As predicted by my Dad, I know mine are. :)

G.I. is also medical speak for Gastro-Intestinal and even though the food served at the local forces station is above and beyond normal,I've heard horror stories of M.R.E.s (Meals Ready to Eat)causing gastro intestinal problems.

At the Ranger school we were issued two c-rats a day for two months and we could only eat when we were told to. I lost 30 lbs. on that diet. Didn't have a problem with it then and still don't.

Yeah, idiots $@!& themselves up pretty bad on MREs. Each MRE is supposed to last you an entire day, they usually have around 3000 calories in each. You eat more than that, you're gonna $@!& yourself up.

----Danny,

MREs (at least a few years back when I was in) were rationed out to pretty much what each team needed for whatever given time they were spending in the field. Naturally all the good ones went first.

Ceallach:

Surprisingly, todays MREs are only approximately 1,250 calories! Three a day is actually the normal consumption. When I was on active duty, that was okay because of the very active lifestyle but now that I am retired 3,750 calories a day would probably make me fatter than I am now  ....To be honest, like most NCOs, I lived on coffee more than anything else anyway.

For me, the absolute worst were the t-rations Chicken Cacciatore. The first time I saw this in Grafenwoehr Germany, I thought they were pulling a joke on me. Not to be overly gross, but it looked like what someone would barf up after drinking a whole bottle of Puerto Rican 151. It tasted pretty nasty too!

My favorite was when the mess hall (Frankfurt Germany) would serve apple crisps for desert. My wife and I were young privates back in '77 and she would always pretend that she did not like it and give me hers.

truebluefliplover, t-rations story sounds like the worst but your apple crisps sounds like the very best, congrats Bro.

No-one wants to hear this but we ate like kings in the Air Force. My first 4 on the flight line, every aircraft that wasn't air force that landed, crew asked to go to the chow hall.lol
for the worst, MREs I agree could have an adverse effect on the GI tract of whomever has the unpleasant task of eating one. Unless, of course, if you're starving they might actually be very edible.

Solid Body Love Songs:

I remember once, after coming back from the field, I had some MREs that I had not eaten in my duffle bag. The kids found them and thought that they were some kind of great treat
