:) All of us that have spent time in the militery, have no doute some profound thaughts about the (CHOW). Some good and some not so good. Try and remember one of each. Mt Favoret of all time was S.O.S. I think they posted it on the minue :?: :?: as Creamed Beef On Toast, it was of coars Hamburger gravy on Mashed Potatos or bread. I loved the stuff. Morning noon or night and lots of Milk.

On the other end of the spectrum, was (Greasy Bacon and Eggs). I usually opted for the cold cerial. and O.J.
We were not at war at that time so it was mostley Good Friends and Good Times :) :)

----Danny,

For me, the absolute worst were the t-rations Chicken Cacciatore. The first time I saw this in Grafenwoehr Germany, I thought they were pulling a joke on me. Not to be overly gross, but it looked like what someone would barf up after drinking a whole bottle of Puerto Rican 151. It tasted pretty nasty too!

My favorite was when the mess hall (Frankfurt Germany) would serve apple crisps for desert. My wife and I were young privates back in '77 and she would always pretend that she did not like it and give me hers.

The absolute worst I ever had was in SERE training. SERE stands for Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape. ESSentially in the school, you are trained how to escape from captivity and survive off the land fr as long as possible. The worst part of this is killing and eating the eyes of a rabbit. The squishy texture and the pop when you bite into it, horrible.

Other than that, MRE omlettes.

Worst -- the B3 can in a C-rat meal marked with those despised words "ham and mutha-fuggahs", a horrible concoction of greazy ham chunks in a rancid cream sauce with overcooked lima beans. Second worst, the same B3 can ink-stamped "pork pattie" (aka "mystery meat").

Best -- the GI chow I got during my three nights and two days spent aboard the USS Oriskany in the Gulf Of Tonkin. Best galley in the Navy! Second best, the food at the David C. Grant Medical Center messhall at Travis AFB in California. Even during my chemotherapy the food tasted great.

Thanks, Danny.

The gracious and elegant Mrs Retroverbial, as a newly-minted Army PV1. She retired as a Sergeant First Class, Signal Corps after twenty years of service.

I would love to post a picture of my spouse in uniform, but she would kill me to pieces. That beautiful little filipina can be stubborn....

As a small boy 10/11 in Anchorage AK. I was told that because of the cold war 1954, and the relative closeness to the Rushon border, GI's with Familys liveing off base in private housing were given a monthly alotment of C rations for each family member in our case it was 4 cases or a one momth supply of food and other stuff just in case. I rember the caned food was prity good, BF. Stew/Brown Bread/Creckers/ Jam/Peanut Butter/Chicken/Candy and then there was packaged itoms Candy Bars that had turned white/Smokes Lucky Strike in a green pack/Pall Mall/Bul Duram/ T.P. tooth powder/ and some other stuff I dont remember I can remember trying to get my hands on a pack of smokes. my dad cought me and made me chew one and that was the end of that. :( :(    .

My favorite was the biscuits and gravy that could be found in every d-fac for breakfast chow. Least favorite was definitely Jambalaya MREs... :?
And yeah, didn't have too much tasty chow in SERE training. I feel you on that one Ceallach.

The worst had to be the MRE's that Ham and Eggs...Ham is NOT supposed to be GRAY...neither are eggs...not to mention the biscuits you could play hockey with :!: :!: :!:

The best had to be the chow at the DFAC at Camp Victory in Iraq...I had two troops I had to PT the crap out of to keep em of the fat boy program...three hours each night just to keep them even...the Cheesecake was outstanding but it was 550 calories for a small slice!

Hey Danny you had three posts today about the military...you missing the uniform :?:

I was put on the "weight GAIN" program in basic/a.i.t........nothing like a full stomach on a forced march in August @ LeonardWood Mo.
The "heavy drops" hated me.

Arjay is right on with the C-rat "ham and garbage" being the worst, with m/m pattie almost tied for worst.....
remember the "John Wayne" bar? chocolate and wood chips.......
and the John Wayne t/p........rough & tough & won't take no  off nobody........
