I've been a Stratocaster guy forever, but I'm thinking of going to the dark side and pick up a Gibson SG. Anyone out there made the switch?

Dark Side? I think it's a great idea to have more than one sonic brush to work with. I have all different brands of guitars. Supro, Fender, Dano, Ibanez and even a cheap Stinger that that I set up for slide. Different guitars can help vary your style. Guaranteed you'll play the SG differently than the Strat just due the difference in scale length and the fact you probably won't be dealing with a tremolo.

I'm with Supro - no need to "make the switch." Though I really like Fender guitars and consider them my favorite, I also own Epiphone, Peavey, Washburn, Yamaha, Floyd Rose, Schecter, Electra, Michael Kelly, Ovation and Ibanez, plus. Every guitar has its own sound and I don't like limitations, so I've experimented with dozens of different brands through the years. Don't swap - add. More guitars is a good thing.

Get yourself a WIDE strap with a rough backside. SGs tend to be a little neck heavy (the Epiphone more so that the Gibson though). The wide and rough strap will counter that quite nicely. I also rest my forearm against the body of the SG and that tends to help too, I think...

I say go for it! Like everyone else here, I like to have different guitars in my arsenal. And an SG is on the list in the future also.

i agree. buy different guitars for different tones. fender doesnt cover nearly 1/4 of the bases. i cant restrict myself to 1 brand like that.

Very nice set up![/quote]

Thanks...I have just three Gibsons and usually use them through my Concert II Amp, but for some reason only the SG sounds good through the SR, well to my ears anyway.

Hi Markus,if you buy an SG you may need to invest in a weighted guitar strap to counter the neck-heaviness.Also if in the SG market go with the Epiphone G-400 Custom,it's a 3 pup model with a beautiful antique ivory finish and gold hardware.I suggested the Epi because it's about 1/4 the cost of the Gibson and is generally a better guitar. My daughter's boyfriend has a Gibson SG but when he picked up my G-400 Custom he was floored by the sound, action and quality that he said were far superior to his Gibson.
There is another SG shaped guitar that doesn't have the neck drop and is even hotter pickup wise but is also great for jazz with the EQ set right. That guitar is the Guild S-100 and S-100 NB,Kim Thayill of Soundgarden relied on them for his massive tone. You can pick up used ones on Ebay for $1,600 and up but they are SG and Les Paul slayers. Vintage Guitar Mag. had an excellent article on them in its March 2011 issue.

Let's see here... I own 2 les pauls and an Es-137... Let me tell you, its nice on the dark side...

I still, however, will never consider a Gibson Bass... Fender has gibson whipped on that one..

i'll never understand why people complain about the neck being heavy. seriously.
i spend my time with the neck in my hand. if you know it drops a bit you will get use to it and react to it. a weighted strap works as well as a raw undersided leather strap. just dont use the nylon straps.
