My reason being,No p-bass no jazz bass that really narrows the playing field down ALOT,but if they were'nt laying it down on a p-bass or slappin the funk right out the jazzbass then its a toss up between a Ric or a MusicMann bass, either one can duplicate the sound of the other(with the proper player)so its a fools guess,I would not own a Ric and sold both my M.M.'s so my guess is YES,any Fender is Iconic.END OF STORY.

good stuff the rickenbacker and the stingray :D... i don't think i'd consider any fender bass iconic...though i was kinda expecting the telebass and another fender bass to join the list i made the list considering the most mentioned basses (in the case of the topic the basses that were mentioned more than once   )

it's interesting that the more iconic basses tend to be less good (fender not included)
the Hofner is ledgendary; but it is short-scale and even McCartney said he prefered his Rick to record with in the studio; he used the Hof (no knight rider jokes please) live because it could be played left handed easily.
whereas the Gibson EB-3L(34") is an amazing guitar and no one plays it these days.

personaly my top 4 most iconic guitars would be Fender P; Fender J; MM Stingray and thr Rick (Lemmy FTW)

I love the Beatle bass, and it was my choice, but personally, I love the Ric bass. I'm also a huge fan of the Scott Pilgrim books, media, game, etc though and it is featured prominently.

the scott pilgrim movie could be better though

For me it had to be the Fender, and the Hofner. Fender because I use Fender, and when ever I think of The Beatles, there's Sir Paul McCartney with the Hofner.

ok guys in about one week the poll will close so if you're intressted and haven't voted yet you still have a shot to vote for the basses you think are the most iconic basses that should stand beside the jazz bass and the p bass... happy voting to whoever hasn't voted yet ;)

Even though it's most iconic, as far as how many people use a particular instrument, I couldn't vote the Hofner/Macca bass in good conscience.

Be honest: if it weren't for Sir Paul, those basses would be just a weird little footnote in history...and everytime we see one, we think, "Beatle bass." Other instruments may be identified with a specific artist, but none as closely as the Hofner with Paul.

The Stingray is a more widely-used on stage and in studio by a more diverse group (blues, rock, funk, country, etc.)...it would get two votes from me, if i were to cheat. :P

iconic:
•Of, relating to, or having the character of an icon.
•Having a conventional formulaic style. Used of certain memorial statues and busts.

this lead me to get the definition of icon (the rest was about computer icons  ):

a sign or representation that stands for its object by virtue of a resemblance or analogy to it.

  just in case people were wondering remember this is about your opinions on which basses are the faces of rock...

I thought the premise was most iconic instrument based upon the instrument itself, not who played it.

If it's based on who played it, the Hofner is definitely the most iconic.'...if it's the instrument alone, and we eliminate the Precision Basses (51 & 57) and the Jazz Bass, I stand by my MM Stingray opinion.

and it is... that's why the 4 iconic guitars are the strat the tele the les paul and the sg... if we were to go by players these guitars would never be iconic... at least the top 4 ;)
