Do any of you do your own recording? If so, what sort of hardware or software do you use?

I'm thinking about starting more composition this summer, and i been looking at getting a roland v-studio 20 (opinions?)

I"m thinking this will be what I'll take to college with me, so that way I don't have to lug amps and other equipment back and forth, and cramp up my dorm.

i have a Boss BR micro. wouldnt trade it for nothing.
its totally unbelievable in everything that it does, and
fits into a guitar case easy, as well as your shirt pocket/
look it up on youtube before you judge.
the V20 is nice, i do hope the cakewalk software that comes with it is A LOT easier to use than the older version. thats alot of stuff needed for that V20 to work also.
it is nice, but nothing i would want to reserve space or simlify things.

ive had a micro br and still have the br-600, great little lug around... my drummer has an unlimited supply of mixers so we normaly just plug and play then start over dubbing... i use almost every feature on the thing and have put close to 1000 recordings through it... never miss a thing with it...

i will say that i some times use computer software as well... but all of my mastering is done on the br...

I just run everything through my sound board and hook it up to the computer through an interface and record using Cubase. It gives me good results and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. If I need something better I know where the pro studios are and what their rates are.

I would take a look at the BOSS BR-800 http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=1068&ParentId=110, I own one have created several video tutorials on YT starting with this overview http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLHqIFQEFhg.

I have recorded many tracks with the BR-800, and love it.

As most you all know, I have a brother that works for Roland, and so I also know about about the V-20 Studio. The V-20 & the BR-800 have just about the same features, just the V-20 is smaller in size, more compact & portable.

I was going to get a br800 a few weeks ago & then boss announced the release of the new micro br80. Similar to the micro br but it has the addition of boss's e-jam playalong function & thought that that might be worth waiting for.
I'm using Propellerheads Record software also & would like some kind of hardware recorder that integrates with that.
Question to thouston - does the br800 work okay with a daw such as ableton or record ?
I mean can you control the play/record/pause/rewind & track mixing functions from the device ?
I've been watching with interest your tutorials on yt for some time - thanks for doing them, much appreciated.

Very cool guys 8) PC wise I should be good. I got a pretty beastly laptop I ordered through my college. Its actually what gave me the idea to maybe dabble in recording this summer, since I can't really do much with it until school starts this August...

I'm definitely going to check the Br's out too. Question: what's the pros/cons of DAW format?

thouston: its funny, i followed your link to the Br-800 and I remembered seeing it in a wired magazine one day.

It was considered one of the best personal recording stations you can get on the market :)

I'm with you 100%. I've been using a Lexicon Lambda for several years now, along with Cubase software and it's really pretty limitless and extremely versatile. I have one computer that is dedicated to just recording. I've used it for countless demo recordings and several CDs that my partner and I have released.

I use a UX2 interface and Ableton Live lite that came with the interface. I also use Riffworks (free) as an easy looper for quick stuff. I have tried just about all of the DAW software out there. If you did not get a free DAW with your interface I would suggest Reaper. I also like Presonus Studio One, however it is $400 I think. Reaper is like 40-60 bucks and can do whatever you want. All the top DAWs will do it. Just pick one and go with it and don't look back, you can get lost in DAW land for months. Once you get good with one it won't matter which one it is. Also, keep in mind that there is a ton of free quality plugins you can use for any DAW you choose. Reaper again is outstanding in this area for compatibility. I have not run into any problems with Ableton either.

The new Micro BR is pretty awesome for it's size! I wouldn't use the e-jam option, but for beginners, playing along with the jam tracks is a great learning tool.

Yes, you can, the BR-800 does come bundled with SONAR LE, and the BR-800 ASIO drivers are on the DVD.

I use Reaper, only because my vintage single core AMD will crash if I have 5 or more tracks running with plug-ins with SONAR LE, and when I opened Reaper, Reaper found the ASIO drivers and I had the option to use my BR-800 as control surface, and external audio device.

I know with any DAW, like Ableton for example, you must setup any device in the in the 'users preference' menu.

I've recorded tracks with the BR-800, exported the tracks to Reaper to record soft-synth tracks, and exported back to the BR-800.

This track "Sunrise Over Io' http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=8644395, was recorded by the way above, the basic backing track was created by another musician, I imported the backing track to my BR-800, recorded two guitar tracks using two different BR-800 COSM guitar effects, than exported those tracks to Reaper and added some soft-synths effect using my AXIOM 25, exported the tracks back to the BR-800 for some minor tweaking, and imposted the tracks back to Reaper for some more minor tweaks.

I'm really impressed with the BR-800 features, I've mic my amps & recorded, I've recorded my Mustang I and Cyber-Twin direct, used the internal COSM guitar & vocal effects, made quick field recording using batteries, etc.
