How is it unfair to say he's overrated?

I don't think he's overrated and sucks because it's the cool thing to do. I think and occasionally say these things because it's my honest opinion. Stop acting like you're opinion is the "right" one and that everyone else just has the "cool" opinion.

I picked "Slash by a nose", both are great players but I think Slash's solos are better.

Page (and i'm not even a particular fan). But he has his reputation for a reason.

Slash has some great chops, but I think he's admired as much for his image as his great playing. But has he played anything like "Since I've Been Loving You.." or written anything like "Achilles Last Stand" or "Kashmir" (or 2 dozen others)? I think not, but maybe it's different times. And the fact that Slash doesn't play in a truly extraordinary band to push him to his limits..

Thank good for Slash to keep the idea of the Classic Rock Guitar Hero alive, and to keep Gibson making and selling Les Pauls lol. But Blackmore, Page, Schenker and a few other top flight innovators all have (or maybe that should be, had..) a 5th gear while Slash is stuck in 4th..

Slash plays brilliantly, but by the numbers. He isn't an innovator. He's a great guitar player, but he'll never be one of the 'greats'.
But to be honest, and at the risk of contradicting myself, maybe no 2nd generation guitarist can ever be one of the 'greats' (whatever that means). They are really only re-treading the paths already layed out by giants, and Page was one of those.

Just my humble opinion.

They are both overated, just cuz Led Zeppelin was the greatest Rock band ever and cuz Slash wrote good solos, simple as tht, Lennon wrote brilliant ballads on piano, doesnt make him a great pianist
