Hey, I have a question about active pick-ups. Basically, how are they powered? is there a battery in the P-up itself? does the guitar have to plug into the wall? Thanks, and sorry about the noobish question

Usually powered by a 9v (or 2 9v) batteries located in a dedicated hole int he guitar, or sometimes squeezed into the control cavity.

So how long can you go without having to change the battery? It seems like it would die down pretty quickly.

So replacing the stock humbucker in my strat with an EMG probably wouldn't work very well would it, since their is no cavity or anything like that

most people, when converting from passive to active, use the tremelo cavity, (obviously this only works with trem-guitars)

There's plenty of room in the control cavity of a Strat for a 9-volt and a clip holder.

Battery life depends on how long you leave the guitar plugged in. I change mine once a year, they've never run down.

I have EMG active pickups in my P-Bass. I have the batery under the pick guard. I love the tone that I get from them.

I have EMG pickups in 2 of my Strats and LOVE them!! The battery fits in the control cavity by the 2nd tone knob on my 72 RI' with a pickguard. My other axw, a HM Strat has no pickguard, so the battery fits in the rear control cavity.
I don't know why EMG pups don't get credit for being AWESOME. I have guitars with Duncans and DiMarzios, and the EMGs are very versitile, quiet and powerful in comparison.

I have a modified SL-20 setup on my strat (SLV singles and an 85 HB) with EMG-SPC & RPC tone pots. Only thing I'm going to change is the 85 for an 89 so I can have the coil split at the bridge. I have an actual battery cavity so the battery tilts out of the back.

I've had the axe for a year and had to change the battery last November. I was in a gig and it started cutting out and burping - making some ungodly sounds and didn't know what it was. I had to switch to my Gibson. Thankfully I had the backup.

Really like the pups.
