Okay so I have a Boss DS-1 Distortion, Crybay Wah Wah, MXR Micro Amp, Digitech Whammy, and Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble Pedal, how do i set them in the proper order?
BTW: I put my DS-1 before my Wah for dramatic effect, but besides that I have no idea properly.

Well, the way I would do it is:
1)Wah

2)Whammy

3)Chorus

4)Distortion

5)MicroAmp

Do you have an effects loop? If so, try at least the chorus in the loop, maybe even the wah and whammy too (wah > whammy > chorus). Otherwise, newwt's way looks perfect. Heck, there are only 120 possible combinations, not counting using the loop, what's the problem?

The never-ending debate about whether to put the Distortion/Overdrive before or after the wah continues...(I personally put an overdrive before and after my wah, so I have both methods covered)

Having said that, here's the order I would try:

Boss DS-1 Distortion

Crybay Wah Wah

Digitech Whammy

Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble Pedal

MXR Micro Amp

Try them in different orders to see how YOU like them. Heck, only 120?

th

Took the words right out of my mouth. There is no special order. Just experiment. I usually don't use the loop. I like the way the pedals interact with each other. Try putting the distortion before, then after the wah and you'll see what I mean. I like the distortion before the wah myself, maybe you like it the other way around. You don't have to be conventional and it's fun creating your own personal sound.

Hahaha, ain't that the truth.

When I first saw the OP my first thought was:

Wah
Whammy
Dist.
Chorus
Amp

I've never really used a Whammy, so I'm not sure how it reacts with a Dist. I'm kinda shooting at the hip with that one.

There's a effects order feature on BOSS's site 'Order in the Court' http://www.bossus.com/boss_users_group/article.php?ArticleId=798&ParentId=4.

My pedal order (on my Big Board O' Sonic Delight):

All pedals mounted on/powered by Furman SPB8 Pedalboard

• Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner
• Ibanez TS-9 (re-issue) Tube Screamer (overdrive)
• Boss RT-20 Rotary Ensemble (rotary speaker simulator)
• Dunlop MWA Crybaby Wah (modified GCB95)
• MXR M-101 Phase 90 (phase shifter) (late 70s block logo, no LED)
• Dunlop JH-2S Jimi Hendrix System Classic Fuzz (now discontinued)
• MXR M-676 Classic Overdrive (limited run Guitar Center exclusive)(modified)
• MXR M-133 Micro Amp (gain/volume boost)
• ISP Decimator G-String (noise reducer)
• MXR M-169 Carbon Copy Analog Delay
• Morley ABY (A/B box for amplifier channel switching)

My reasoning for the order:

Boss TU-2 Tuner; this doesn't need to have any interference, just signal from guitar. It also acts as a kill switch for guitar changes.

Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer Overdrive; Here's where I depart from conventional wisdom. The BOSS website Tony Houston (thanks TH!) linked us to says that your wah should have a clean signal in order to get all the nuances it creates properly pushed through, but an overdriven wah sounds cool enough to justify putting this first. It's a harder, heavier sound. It's also cool to overdrive a modulation pedal like the rotary and/or wah.

All my modulation/wah pedals:
RT20 Leslie simulator
Dunlop MWA Wah
MXR Phase 90

Then Fuzz/Overdrive/Boost: That way I can fuzz up or overdrive the modulated signal (if one is present at the time). When I had a distortion pedal in my rig, it went here, too (I realized I didn't use it much, so it's on the sidelines right now). The boost pedal is to perk up what might have been lost through my signal chain.
JH-2S Fuzz
MXR M-66 Classic Overdrive
MXR M-133 Micro Amp

ISP Decimator G-String Noise reducer; because I hate hiss.

MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay; You have to put delay after noise reduction/noise gates because the gate will see the echos/trailing signal as noise and squash it.

Morley ABY for channel switching.

I use the reverb and vibrato/tremolo/whatever-you-call-it on my Vibroverb or Gibson G20 amp.

This might all change soon. I think it's time for a shake-up on the board...

SA: see, that's my idea of a useful post. Interesting to beginners and seasoned players alike. Cool.

Though you then go on to say:

Hell, just when I thought you'd got it all sussed for us!

Be fascinated to see the new setup, SA; and even more fascinated to hear the intelligent reasoning behind it. Neat! 8)

Just since we're doing show-and-tell, for the little it's worth here's the current Ceri rig in all it's less-than-glory. On the practice amp I use:

• Boss TU-2 tuner
• Electro-Harmonix Soul Preacher compressor
• Blackstar HT-Dual drive + distortion
• DigiTech CF-7 Chorus Factory (I won it and don't use chorus enough to bother getting a better one)
• Boss DD-20 Giga Delay

All powered by a T-Rex Fuel Tank. For practice that lot nowadays runs into my Marshall Class5 amp.

For grown-up playing I use exactly the same setup less the Blackstar drive/distortion running into my Marshall Triple Super Lead combo. No need for drive pedals in front of that beast.

A simple way of remembering pedal order that came from a nice Forum user not seen round here these days: "dirties before wobblies". In other words, distortion first, modulation after. Dunno why his saying stuck but it did...

Cheers - C

Thank you! This is one of the things I learned (the hard way) to think out, instead of just adding a pedal to the end or beginning of the signal chain the way I did when I was a youngster. Where you put a pedal--and how it reacts with other pedals in your chain--can make or break your impression of it.

I'm curious about the Blackstar pedals...I've heard some pretty complimentary things about them, but have not had the opportunity to check them out. Are they from the same manufacturer as the amplifier company?

People ask me about my lack of chorus pedal, and I have two answers:
First, I really don't like a chorus effect very much. When I first started playing (in the late 80s), there was the trend of constant chorus-digital delay on so many people's rigs that it turned me off to the combination of those effects (no offense, it's JMHO). It seemed like every slow song had to have ten gallons of chorus poured on top of the guitar tracks. Familiarity bred contempt, I suppose.

Secondly, when I do have the (VERY rare) need to use chorus (usually at the request of the other guitarist in the band), I can just hit the "SLOW" speed on my Boss RT-20 Rotary Ensemble and it makes for a sweet, usable, organic chorus effect (that I promptly turn off at the end of the song :P ).

As soon as I figure out what changes will be done on the BBOSD, I'll post it with an explanation why...I might take pictures along the way and turn it into a "build" thread! 8)
