Okay, I've had my eye on a nice Hofner for a while now, but I'm wondering if I can use my Mustang I combo with it. Or would I just blow the whole thing?

Running a bass through a guitar amp won't damage the amp such but could conceivably hurt the speakers at a higher volume although low volumes "shouldn't" hurt them. Most guitar speakers are made just to handle the frequencies of the guitar's tonal range and cranking a bass through them could cause damage to the cones, voice coils or even shake the glues loose.
Keep it at low volume or run the amp through a bass speaker and you should be OK.BTW the bigger the speaker generally the more bass volume you can use-for instance a 6 or 8" guitar speaker won't nearly handle the volume of a 12 with a bass.

Good point on the warranty. And the one I'm looking at is a 20W through an 8", just to be sure.

Would the reverse work? Could I put an Affinity Strat through, say, a Rumble?

The speaker in a guitar amp will most likely not handle bass frequencies for very long. But using a guitar through a bass amp is no problem. I still to this day play my guitar through an old '70s Traynor bass amp for clean tones, sounds great.

True. I lost a cone out of a new JBL K-120 running out of a 22 watt amp at a very low volume. It was a short scale bass too. The shop where I bought the JBL fixed it, no charge.

I'm not real sure if it too good for the output tranny either. Arjay would probably know for sure. Anyway, bass amps are designed to get the best sound out of your bass guitar.

I run my bass through a 2x10 Roland JC... But then again Rolands are notorious for being good "all purpose" amps... And I bought this one for $200... And I only use it for practice...

It wont hurt it if played at low volumes...

Now that's really odd because the amp comes with a pitch shifter that takes a guitar down to bass frequencies - and lower.

Just a bad idea. I wouldn't recommend it.

I don't disagree with you but what was Fender thinking?

Agree with what everyone else said. This is a totally bad idea. An 8 inch speaker isn't adequate for bass guitar reproduction anyway, other than as a midrange in a 3 way array cab.

Bass amps have different preamp EQ voicings, beefier speakers and beefier amp components like caps, transformers and often larger gauge wiring to the speaker jack.

Using most guitar combos as a bass amp is a sure fire recipe for destruction. There are a few exceptions and these are only piggyback amp heads not guitar combos.

You really can't get a good bass tone from anything smaller than 10 inches usually.
I'd suggest looking for an affordable bass amp second hand at a second hand store, pawn shop or on eBay.
