It's about 1-3 hour drive away to the closest road. On the Nasa photo you can see two claciers on the south coast where the sky is clear, the smaller one is Eyjafjallajökull which erupted last year.

Hay Nonnig: Does being so close to that kind of power make you a little bit nervus? WOW, We have 2 of those fire crackers close to Seattle. Mt. Rainear is suposed to be the big boy potentionaly and Mt. St. Hellins as we all know has an exciteing history. and to the north of us about a 100 Mls. the Big boy of all our local V.C's is Mt. Baker the two big ones each have the potential to take out thousands of folks. Not a fun thing to think about. Some times when we see a cloud hanging over one of them every one sais here we go. It's all part of life on the "Big Blue Marbel".

--------------Danny,

Well around here you can't be any closer to Volcanos. The hole island got greated when the Atlantic ridge drifted over hot spot, hot spot is a kind of crack in the earths crust that collects magma from the center of the earth and volcanos on top of hot spot are often mentioned as super volcanos. The most famous hot spot around is propably Yellowstone.

In the late 1700, a hot spot volcano in Iceland named Laki erupted and caused hardship in Iceland known as Móðurharðindin in Iceland, basicly toxic gases layed over the ground and killed crops and farm animals, and people that took naps on the grass. And historians today claim that the ash from that eruption partially blocked the sun around the hole northern part of the earth causing drop in heat (unusally cold winters) crop failures and even famine in Japan. Some even say that the crop failure in France was one of many triggers causing the French Revoulution.
