The lemon oil you can buy at the Supermarket is Mineral Oil with Lemon scent.
A pint of it will last you years!

Well from the guitars I've worked on in the past I tend to really believe you and about thousands of other guitar players. Yuk man that's just gross.

Mineral oil, as many here have said, is the same as lemon oil (or the more expensive stuff you buy at the guitar store) only w/o the scent. I use it on my rosewood fretboards to clean/condition and also to lube the blades of my electric razor. Great stuff and an inexpensive bottle will last the rest of my life.

The funny thing is that Martin guitars says to avoid using real lemon oil, that the real stuff is too acidic or something and isn't a good idea.

I have used Lemon Oil on rosewood fret boards for over 30 years, I thought this was common practice. I had no idea folks didn't know about this. Not trying to poke folks here, but it is amazing when you realize sometimes it is the little things you do that you don't realize others don't know.

Glad to see the word get out on this, especially since I would have never thought to post it! I have been using the same pint bottle for almost all of those 30 years too!

Mineral oil does not go through the finished part of the neck so all it's doing is wiping off grime because it's wet. Does not apply a finish like Dunlop 65 or others. Your better off using one of the many cleaners/polish on market. Mineral oil is good to use on fret boards because it keeps them from drying and cracking from age because of there porous nature. I like Dr. Stringfellows Lem Oil for fretboard.

I've heard of using mineral spirits or mineral alcohol to clean fretboards, never heard the mineral oil thing though....I use Dawes Lemon Oil....have done for years.

MINERAL SPIRITS! Don't even mineral spirits! If your cleaning machine parts or cutting pipe yea.
Mineral spirits is not mineral oil.

Anyone using bore oil?

I have seen some references to it on this forum and considered trying it out but it seems it might be more appropriate for woodwind instruments than a fretboard after a bit of googling.

I use bore oil on my unfinished fingerboards. But I believe that it is just mineral oil.

There may be some more exotic types of bore oil that contain other "oils," but the cheap stuff is just mineral oil.
