i was watching a "How It's Made" episode and they showed how to make a guitar. In the end they used mineral oil on the neck of the guitar to clean it. Anyone else use this process? I started using it after i saw it and it does a good job cleaning the wood and keeping it fresh.

I've heard of using mineral spirits or mineral alcohol to clean fretboards, never heard the mineral oil thing though....I use Dawes Lemon Oil....have done for years.

I have heard of this before. Mineral oil should be safe enough for a poly guitar finish. In fact, a poly finish can be rubbed down with almost anything (except sand paper!). If you have an expensive guitar and a nitrocellulose finish, in stead of taking a risk of marring the finish, I would just use a good guitar polish (that does not contain silicone!). As for fretboards, lemon oil works well for cleaning. The only other thing I would never use on a fretboard (or the finish) would be Pledge furniture spray. I believe it is loaded with silicone. :D

Sure, on rosewood (unfinished) fingerboards.

Lemon Oil IS Mineral Oil.

I used to make hardwood butcher-block cutting boards by the hundreds, then forced my wife and kids to make liberal applications of mineral oil to seal and protect the wood. Mineral oil is a completely inert, non-toxic product, same as contained in ghs Fast Fret string cleaner, which I use on most of my guitars, especially those with rosewood or ebony fretboards.

I use a few drops of Old English Lemon Oil. Although it is called lemon oil, it is actually mineral oil according to the company (http://63.139.250.171/msds/89666.pdf).

The fretboard of this old guitar cleaned up pretty well after setting in a closet for years.

I have heard of it and thought I would try the next fretboard cleaning.

Mineral oil has been in use in the cooking industry for cleaning and perserving woods that come in contact with food for a lonng time. It has good cleaning ability as well as being non toxic, it also has no smell and wont become stickey. if you use it on wooden handeled knives for instance after going through the dish washer the wood wont dry out and will maintane its new look forever. cant see why the same wouldent be trew for a guitar. and the cost is nothing you can get it at the Pharmisy, maby $2.00. I would not use it on a high gloss finish, Fenders little pump guitar polish works beter and wont smear. :) PS Dont run your guitar through the dish washer.

Howdy!

I use Dunlop 65 Ultimate Lemon oil on my rosewood and ebony fretboards once or maybe twice a year depending on how grim the fret board gets. I apply the oil with a cloth let it do its thang for a bit then wipe it off.

Here's a few pic's of it in use on my Godin XTSA's ebony fretboard. Not a Fender but its such an awesome guitar. :D

I use the same lemon oil, generally I only use it if my guitar's fretboard gets really dirty, which isn't all that often. I dunno if it's just me but I really enjoy playing my guitar just after treating the 'board with lemon oil. Maybe I'm just weird  It does smell pretty good though :)
