in my opinion, i think Buddy Holly started the trend because he really only played his fender strat. Clapton and everyone else listed above has played a different model other than fender. To my knowledge, I haven't seen buddy holly without his Fender strat

extremeley true, he brought popular attention to it, i mean what do you think of wen you here the name "Buddy Holly", i see gary busey singing on stage in a cheap suit and a strat

Not to mention one of his favorite guitars was the Univox and he was seen playing SGs from time to time :roll:

Back in the late 60s when Jimi Hendrix appeared on the scene there was a virtual stampede for Strats and at the time music industry pundits said that Jimi Hendrix was responsible for selling more Strats than all of their ads,PR men and catalogues combined. Of course other great names switched over to Strats once they heard what Jimi was doing with them,so indirectly he's responsible for the proliferation of Strats moreso than any other guitarist because he was the root cause of the Strat becoming such a rock staple.So he qualifies for the most famous and also influential.
