I made a coment like that to someone just the other day. I get so I dont want to play at all. There are a lot of good books out there filled with songs, I was tiped of about an online website called (LICK BY NECK.COM) they have about 1000 songs all with tabs and music video. They are all old songs, but good exercise. Check them out, you will like it and its FREE. :)

I find that a little variety in a set list can definitely make a show more enjoyable; both for the band and the fans.

My partner and I are currently doing about 200 different songs, that's enough for about four 4-hour gigs. So we change it up all the time, depending on the bar or the crowd, plus we can cover a lot of different requests. And we're always adding stuff other bands in the area don't do.

That's the way to roll. :)

I was in charge of writing the set list and used about 40 songs a night from 75 we had in the current rotation. Since we had been together for many years, I could pull in a few songs from the "way back" machine, if one of us basically carried the song. We also would call a song not on the set list to fit a situation or the mood of the room.

I like your comment about playing songs that other band don't do. I was blessed with playing with a singer that could nail a Robert Plant or Steve Tyler vocal. We would crank up "Black Dog" or "Sweet Emotion" and fill a dance floor in a flash. :)

'Pretty much agree with Nevin. There are tens of thousands of pieces of music out there. Playing a set can be sort of doing a job; play what's needed, what the audience wants.

But for keeping music alive in one's soul, learn new material, especially out of your normal genres.

If you are a for example a metalhead or white suburban "blues" player, try something in classical (yes, electric guitar works for many pieces) or show tunes or lounge or traditionals or world or...

...and if you want to get really crazy, try learning a different instrument. Buy a clarinet at a garage sale and....

Only if you're a great songwriter...and I've only known a few of those, the rest just thought they were great.
Are you a songwriter?...I'm not....everything I ever came up with sounded like something that was already done...so I play songs that everybody else wrote, except when I take a solo... :)

When I started playing actively in bands, one of my earliest concerts stuck out in my mind, Johnny Cash at Cobo Hall. He had no set list, came out, talked to fans, played what the band or crowd felt like.

So that's what I've always done, just went out there, learned how to handle a crowd and wing it.

A friend of mine played with Waylon Jennings,he said they went to an Apache reservation to do a show and the crowd wanted to hear,Love of the Common People...I guess that's the name of the song.....he said they did it about 20 times that night...gave them what they wanted to hear. :)
