So, Steve Lukathur told a story about meeting Hendrix. Hendrix took a look at Steve's guitar (a Les Paul) strung with something normal....I think 10's....and told steve that he needed to stop playing that girlie guitar and get some real strings. I don't remember what Hendrix was playing, but it was on par with what SRV used later.

Hi Jack,if you look very closely at film footage and pix of Jimi you can see that he used an extremely light gauge string.I've heard that Steve Lukather story before too but I can't vouch for the validity of it.I read in an interview of Jimi once that he said in the old days before extra and superlight gauge strings that he used to buy a regular set of strings pitch the E 6th string and use the A for the 6th etc. and use the thinnest gauge banjo string for the high E.Apparently a lot of blues players had been using this method for years to allow for more radical but easier string bending.Hank Marvin of the Shadows also used this trick and passed it on to the Beatles.
