Actually I talked with the judges afterwards (in a friendly way, not in a "why didn't I win?" way) and I think they got it right. In the first round I was nice and relaxed, and I played really well because of that. Going into the second round I felt a lot more pressure, I had a good number of extended family members and friends there and from the feedback I got from people before I felt like I was going in a favorite (which is not a good feeling). In the second round I was picked to go first (again, not a good feeling) and I just kind of felt like I was going through the motions, not playing from my heart like the first time. I had advice coming in from all directions, which ordinarily is a good thing but it's not when you start thinking "Ok, I need to play faster here" or "I need to look up again now since my family always complains that they can't see my face", it can destroy your focus.

The judges picked up on all of that, and I didn't get the same scores as the first time around. The guy who won totally didn't expect to win, and that (and the fact that he related well to the audience) worked in his favor. He also got to go last, so he had time to calm his nerves before he played. He was thrilled to win though, so I'm happy for him. :)

Texas, congratulations, I'm sure that you played well enough to go on but judges aren't perfect. I would have liked to be there. Was russianracehorse in the audience?

No, it would be at least a three hour drive for him. I might see him again this summer if he decides to come back out to Austin for the guitar workshop. :)

Texas, you are a very cool young lady, thanks. 8)

yeah everybody wants to give advice. thing is, they arent you.
its not them up there doing their thing, its you. in every situation advice is good to have but from experienced players. just be yourself in all things.

Y'all can have the competition scene,it's not for me...even the whole concept of the competition and the name "King of the Blues" goes against the nature of blues music as I see it and feel it and play it.
But I know to each his own...best of luck to all!
