wow that will preach right there. some powerful words. i agree.
when you find a influence and you find that they are becoming a big part of your music, its time to look into who influenced them. keep on rolling it back like that.
all roads lead to Robert Johnson eventually.

to settle your nirana obseesion; hopefully one day you'll come to realise that they aren't as good as your putting them out to be. sure, i'm a fan, an if it weren't for them i probably wont be the person i am today. i freely admit now that when i first joined i was very obsessed with them, like you. but this one day i just listened to i think it was the ramones first album, and i had a sudden change in music. i listened to basically anything revolving around rock from then on. what i'm saying is expand your range of music man, like floyd has stated i listen to basically all those bands plus a lot more cause of nirvana. alot of them are better than nirvana.

PS; sorry if that made no sense, i just had 3 cups of coffee

+1 Dig way deeper than Cobain.
A federal law for Nirvana covers? I can't stand most of the Federal laws on the books now or Nirvana for that matter. Would you really want the government telling you what kind of music to play? I'd rather do jail time. Time to move on................................

Musical taste, as a subject is such a mystical thing. But the following is a general observation:

In youth, our taste tends to adhere to the "new music of the day" but as we grow older we may also find we like some of the music of prior generations. Rarely will we admire the sounds that our children adore.

For so many years I had heard about Nirvanna and the song "smells like teen spirit" without have ever heard them. I checked them out the other day on "youtube"
uuhhhhh, thats what all the fuss was about??? Nope, not for me, I cannot relate or enjoy it, and I would not as a teen in the 70's either. But my nieces and nephews dug it.

Mystical.

I've never been a fan of Nirvana,Cobain either....and was subjected to their music by a coworker who listened to an "unplugged" album, his voice grated on my nerves and the music did also.
To each his own....

So to sum things up: everyone agrees with me that there should be a federal law requiring at least one Nirvana cover on all albums in the "rock" and "alternative" genres.

No. They really weren't as good as you're making them out to be. Am I a fan? Yes. Do I act like Cobain was some god among men? No. Because he wasn't. And he really wasn't kidding when he said half of his music was ripping off the Pixies. It was, and he was doing so intentionally. He also plagiarized a Killing Joke song for Come As You Are and Milk It is ripped off from The Melvins' It's Shoved. He was talented, not a god.

There are only 12 notes in western music--there's bound to be some repetition of chords, notes, and melodies. Nobody owns the copyright to E, F, F# and B. Throughout the history of pop/rock 'n roll music, many songs sound vaguely like others. Come as You Are was an extremely original song. Yes, Kurt even joked about it w/ lyrics like "I think I've heard this before" and playing Boston's "More than a Feeling" at Reading as a lead-in to SLTS.

Where, anywhere in this thread, did anyone assert that Cobain was a "god"? People are just itching to say that Cobain was "not a god" so they sometimes drop that unfair weapon prematurely--it's responding to an assertion that was not made. No one (not here in this thread anyway) said he was a god among men.

We're just talking about music here.

The TC, now banned apparently, was acting as though he was one of the greatest musicians to ever walk the earth. Again, I'm a fan, but I know he was a pretty bad guitarist. GREAT writer, great singer (IMO, but that's very subjective), but never played anything a student who's only been playing a few months couldn't play.

Also, he openly admitted to stealing the riff from KIlling Joke in his journal.

+2...Like already said, look past Cobain and look to his influences. Where do you think he got his sound and style from? :?: :!: I'm not trying to bash him or anything, but why everyone just looks at him and says "he's so awesome" is beyond me. Look at the other styles and see what you find, not just from him.

When Nirvana first came out, I couldn't go more than 5 minutes without hearing them on the radio or hearing about them on MTV. I got burned out on them very quickly.

Now, 20 years later, I've just started listening to them again, and even recently picked up a copy of Nevermind. Listning with fresh ears, I've concluded it's a solid album, and it certainly was far different from what was being played on rock or top 40 radio stations at the time.

There's no question Cobain and company were overrated (though that's not their fault, they were hailed by the music press as rock and roll saviors and a lot of people jumped on that). Among their peers, I think Pearl Jam, Alice and Chains and Soundgarden all were more interesting musically.

But Nirvana were good, they were definitely influential, and, if nothing else, you can thank them for probaly saving us from a few more Winger and Damn Yankees albums... 8)

Sorry but in my mind, Nirvana = poop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Never 'got' them, couldn't stand Cobain or Novoselic. Grohl is a genius and Nirvana was a stepping stone for him but look how long it took the Foos to really get anywhere without the Nirvana 'monkey around his neck'

HEy everyone is entitled to their opinions but as the above poster said, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and the like were far more musically interesting because it was about the music and not about the band ......... all in my opinion of course!

As I said, Nirvana = poop!!!!

(Wookee lights the touch paper.........again)

It's not about "digging deeper." That's an arrogant, cliche response. Poor Mr. Johnson had to play in 1920 on a broken guitar with 14s for strings and no amp. Okay, that was his time--too bad. I agree that Johnson--although perhaps not his fault--gave us less. Please tell me where I can purchase some Robert Johnson music to get me through my day. Whether it's just (fair) or not, about 3,000 times more people have heard of Cobain (sure--he had an advantage as far as being in his prime 20 as opposed to 80 years ago) and Nirvana and Cobain, therefore, "influenced more," not just quantity of people but also all rock music that has happened since 1991.

"Dig deeper." That is the epitome of arrogance on this type of board. If you're into rock n roll, you're on a freight train to the blues. Blah blah. Of course--the old blues players get credit as the grandfathers of rock n roll. Okay--everyone knows that. Yeah, we've seen Jack White's movie too.

Now, I'm pretty sure the original post saying there should be a "federal law" was a joke, obviously, but this is all some good discussion....

Now, everyone has a right to their opinion, and perhaps Johnson indeed influenced more (either a larger quantity of people or "more" the music) than Cobain, but saying "Dig deeper than Cobain" to the OP was an affirmative sentence commanding the OP to do something and is an example of rudeness and arrogance at a pretty high level, actually. People should just express their opinions here, politely, as opposed to telling people what to do. Just my 2 cents.

TC, you should look up some of the bands that influenced the ones you've been jamming down our throats... They're usually pretty damn awesome!

Hell, I discovered basically EVERYTHING I now listen tot through Nirvana and other "grunge" bands of the 90s. You should ALWAYS be looking to expand your music collection, there's not such thing as too much music. 8)

Some bands you may like:
Mudhoney
The Melvins
Black Flag
Flipper
The Jesus Lizard
Big Black
Shellac
Butthole Surfers (based on your current tastes, I'd recommend starting with Independent Worm Saloon)
Pixies
The Wipers
Children Collide (new band, shown to me by another user here)
Descendents, the album Milo Goes To College in particular
Helmet
Husker Du

If you like any of those, feel free to PM me and I can gladly recommend more 8)

Thank you. This is a good list. I have listened to most of these, mainly through pandora (a great website in my opinion), but not all of them and I will indeed check them out.

I'll start by creating stations based on them on pandora.

Also check out Minutemen. Double Nickels On The Dime in particular. AMAZING band.
