you know how most people consider the 4 most iconic guitars to be the strat, the tele, the les paul and the sg? i was thinking is there such a thing for basses? my conclusion if there isn't any is that the 4 most iconic basses would be:
-the p-bass (obviously)
-the j-bass (obviously now here is where this might change up a bit)
-the musicman stingray
-the rickenbacker 4000 bass

what do you guys think? i also thought of the gibson thunderbird but i thought that it wasn't that iconic...

Fender Jazz,
Fender Precision,
Rickenbacker 4001,
Gibson Thunderbird.

Honourably mention to Hofner Violas.

didn't remember the hofners thanks but i think the musicman deserves its place more than the hofner i think it's more of a fight between the thunderbird and the stingray

Musicmen are better, no question, but I think the Hofner is probably more recognisable.

sure they are getting good but i'm refering to basses that made history warwicks are good but i consider them kinda like the ibanez or prs of basses... when you think strat tele les paul and sg that's what people think (at least from what i see) now think "basswise"

this is a good point here as well... the gibson eb bass is pretty famous as well probably as famous or more than the thunderbird... this is harder for basses but the p bass, j bass and rickenbacker bass are standing strong... i still think the musicman should be one but both the eb bass and the thunderbird are good candidates

'51 Precision--the original, the best.
'57 Precision--it should have been renamed (Stratobass, anyone?); although it shared the name of it's 6-years-older cousin, they were two different animals.
'60 Jazz Bass--Originally called the Deluxe Bass, it was a game-changer, again.
Hofner Violin-bodied bass--Instantly recognizable, it immediately conjures up the Beatles and the Rutles--two iconic bands.
Rickenbacker 4000 series--Beatles again.
Fender Musicmaster--birth of the short scale electric bass
Fender Bass VI--yes, there were baritones and 6-string basses before, but this one perfected it.
Ibanez Soundgear series--yes, they were introduced not too long ago, but they are affordable, comfortable and nice-looking; plus, they sound good for every style of music.
Gibson EB3, EB0--Jack Bruce. Enough said.

Iconic?

It's been said.

Precision
Jazz
Thunderbird
Rickenbacker

with only-Paul honourable mention to the Hofner; the others are much better instruments.

Alembic trumps everything but a p, j, and, ric.

Has everybody forgotten Steinberger? Way better pick than some that have been mentioned. :P
