Go solid top, no matter what brand.

Look at Fender, Ibanez, Washburn, Epiphone...all are more bang than you expect for the buck.

I hate Ovations, period. Uncomfortable standing up or sitting down, and I'm not particularly enamored with the tone overall. JMHO, YMMV.

Hi Way Cool! I will through the name Takamine in the pot. Their lower & mid range are comparable to Yamaha, so if you don't immediately warm to one, you could go for the other. I also would second TGS' call for solid top, or even all solid, but in that price range a solid top is as good as it gets (new at least).

Good luck, and show us pics when you return!

bingo. one of the reply types i wanted to hear. i like these guitars and this company. a great guitar at a fair price. ive not played many of the mid to lower end ones though.
these will be the first i go to look at. i might even look on CL for those that "thought" they wanted to learn to play. i dont think i can go wrong with this company, but willing to nbe open minded and look at others mentioned as well.

While I prefer electric guitars, I bought a new Taylor 214CE last year for about $1000 and to be completely honest, it was a mistake for me. Even after having a tech that Taylor recommended look at it, I still do not like it. It still buzzes and is very thin/trebly sounding. The worst thing, for me, is that it just lacks any decent volume unplugged. Compared to my old Yamaha acoustic, there is a significant difference. Maybe someday I will trade it in for something else. I am looking at these but they are a little out of my price range for now.

As I've goten older and my GUT larger than it once was, I find that larger guitars are not as comfortable to play as they were. so I stick to the smaller bluesier guitars. and they have the sound that I'm looking for. Enjoye the search Thats a big part of the fun.

Usually on acoustics laminated wood is louder than solid wood. Doesn't mean it'll sound better either way. Therefore a good mix: Solid top, rest laminated. Body depth is important. (the guitar's that is).

I have two wood mixes:
Dreadought w/out cutaway: Solid spruce top, solid Indian rosewood back & sides, mahogany Neck. Transparent sound, thinner down the bottom, faster neck, thinner body. (Freshman FA400D)
Dreadnought w/ cutaway: Solid mahogany back, sides & neck, solid spruce top. Fat body- mellow & loud! (Tacoma DM9C).

It's in the mix, for me.

Also the type of finish is relevant. The Tacoma is oiled and nothing else, the Freshman is clear gloss finished. I prefer the first, sounds more "open", I don't know. 8)

Beautiful rosewood, eh? :)
