ok guy, im thinking about getting myself an acoustic guitar.
i dont want to spend a big bunch of money, but at the same time looking
for bang for the buck. ive owned and loved yamaha acoustic's in the past.
i just dont remember and models that they were. yes its been 20 yrs probably.
so whats out there i should keep an eye out for? i dont like ovation and most of the time dont like martian guitars either. im looking for a guitar that i dont have to worry about it getting beat up, something road worthy just the same. there are a couple high dollar acoustics ives entertained the idea of getting but they arent guitars i would feel comfortable out playing with so i crossed them off the list for now. any ideas?

Whatever you do, go for one with a solid top. Don't be fooled by the fancy flamed maple tops on cheapish guitars. If they're under $500 chances are it's a thin veneer or a photograph. And on an acoustic, it actually makes a big difference in how it sounds.

I have a Washburn which is decent, although it's a laminate top. I got it used for $100, it was my first acoustic. The acoustic I'm really liking right now is actually my Mom's, an Ibanez AW-30. It has a solid top and it sounds fantastic. It was about $300 new ten years ago, I don't know if they even make them anymore. Takamine is another brand you should check out for good quality for the price. Also, the new Fender acoustics aren't bad even though they haven't had the best reputation in the past.

Pretty tough criteria, not much left to choose from. I was going to suggest an Ovation with the rounded plastic back. I bought one for my son for somewhere around $150, and by the time I got it setup with new strings and played it for a while, I really wanted to keep it and get him another. He has used it for about ten years and it has held up surprisingly well. I thought that the Ovation was the best bang for the buck in that price range, it sounds great but I have limited experience with acoustics. I have an Ibanez, but IMO the Ovation is better for feel, action and sound.

I dig Guild acoustics a lot, the GAD-25 is #$@*&!% fantastic, it'll run you about $600

thats my major problem with ovation, the plastic backs. i cant set and play them. they slip out and off my lap lol. to me they are as hard to play as a flying V guitar.

Man...I understand your thinking on this one Rick, as I never wanted to spend big bucks for an acoustic. But then I played my Taylor 614ce at the store, and paid almost 2800 bucks for it. And when it comes to this guitar, I feel it was worth every penny I paid. It also is a very durable guitar that I have no fear about taking around with me, and ain't she purdy?

Yeah, definitely hard to keep steady while sitting. I start off playing normally, then switch to Jeff Healy style once it slides down.

How about a lower end taylor? Like the 200 series? http://www.guitarcenter.com/Taylor-210G ... 1520278.gc
As you can probably guess I'm partial to Taylor when it comes to Acoustics, I think they have the best tone available. I had a mediocre Dean that I got tired of, and countless other $500 or so acoustics that were never able to satisfy me, but even the cheapest Taylor I've played feels and sounds great.

back in the day (80s) when we hit the studio there were guitars and amps everywhere
for use. good stuff, top dollar. well, we use to fight over this one acoustic that someone had left there yrs before we got there. it was a yamaha acoustic. it was a midgrade guitar at best. the dang thing played and sounded so good. one of the sound guys told us that never since that guitar had been there had anybody ever got in a pissin match over it but us lol. i love that guitar, well, we loved that guitar. i dont remember which model it was but i think the sky would be the limit on $$ if i could ever find another one. thing is, it was a cheap'o too.

I can't form much of an opinion about Yamaha acoustics. I've only played one in my life a few years ago, and it was one of the higher end models; it was very nice, but also very expensive. I'd recommend avoiding Dean, and Ibanez guitars in the price range you're looking at. Also, have you looked at Schecter? I know they're mostly known for their electrics, but they also have a nice acoustic model. Every Schecter I've ever played is WAY ahead of anything else similar in the same price range.

Definitely check them out. My Schecter Hellraiser is by far the most well built electric I have; Even the Tele doesn't compare. Schecter is building a strong reputation, and if you've never played one you'll understand why once you do. Great stuff they're putting out right now.
