Cobain was a talented at writting lyics/poetry, for sure even though he claims he didn't care about what his lyrics were about. i still reckon he put some thought into some of them. as for a guitraist, well, i dont think he was really trying to be that good. kinda like johnny ramone he was a real influence and a music legend, but anyone can learn his songs in 2 minutes.

Yes.

It's trendy to pretend to claim that Kurt Cobain/Nirvana and/or Smashing Pumpkins/Billy Corgan are not musical legends, even though they are clearly musical legends.

Success ≠ talent

It's trendy to say that too. Of course success does not equal talent. As a talented lawyer who may or may not be "successful" by some standards, I know that all too well. But Billy Corgan is an amazingly talented musician. He can basically play classical guitar on acoustic (or play Yngwie Malmsteen stuff too) if he feels like it. And he's not finding much "success" lately; everyone loves to bash him. Cobain, of course, was not a Van Halen-type guitarist, but he was talented.

I don't think you know what "trendy" means. I think you're trying to say, "People who are uninformed and stupid and go with the crowd say _______ about Cobain/Corgan, but I know better because I'm so cool and have dug deeper than everybody else...I know these artists better than you so your opinions are unimportant." Their feeling or expression of their opinion not "trendy" nor "popular." And you dismissing their opinion is not a sign of your superior knowledge, it's arrogant.

These two guys were obviously your favorite guitarists, and that's cool. I like both of them as guitarists and songwriters/lyricists. Cobain was a good singer; I won't repeat myself about Corgan's vocal imitations of large flying insects.

But neither of them were/are great guitarists. I'm not knocking them--one of my favorite guitarists is Hound Dog Taylor, who, for all intents and purposes, sucked as a guitarist and vocalist. (He famously said about himself, "When I die, people are gonna say, 'He couldn't play worth a $^&*, but it sure sounded good!'") For Hound Dog, Cobain, Corgan* and many others, the feel and the passion is what's important--not the technical skills.

Passion beats technical skill every time in my book.

You've made your point about how big of a fan you are. We see your passion and your feeling for these guys. You've basically posted three different threads saying the same thing, albeit from different sides of the argument. We get it.

...now, what else do you have?

*You have mentioned several times that Corgan can "play like Malmsteen"...so can my fourteen year old nephew and his thirteen-year-old friend. That doesn't mean it's good. Malmsteen is a mechanical, soulless arrogant jackass who plays only on a technical basis. He has no feeling. Don't sell Billy short; at least he has some emotion and feeling to his playing.

Not really, actually. Right place, right time.

Too bad Johnson was only widely recognized long AFTER his death and after being a notable influence on prominent musicians. And yes, they were in the right place at the right time. it had NOTHING to do with any of their talent as musicians, rather the fact that Kurt could write a catchy song that appealed to the "weird" kids.

I'm a fan, I would not be who I am today without their music, but you need to stop with the over the top fanboy-ism, it's getting extremely annoying.
